The Long-Awaited Delivery of GE F404 Engines
After numerous delays, the GE F404 engine delivery for the LCA Mk1A has finally begun. This marks a crucial moment for India’s indigenous fighter jet program, preventing it from slipping into dormancy. On March 25, GE Aerospace announced the delivery of the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
In an official statement, GE Aerospace highlighted its excitement about this milestone:
“On Tuesday (March 25), we were excited to deliver the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to our valued customer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A fighter jet. It is an important milestone in our 40-year relationship with HAL and in our efforts to ensure a strong future for India’s military by developing next-generation fighters while enhancing the country’s defense manufacturing capabilities.”
GE’s Long-Standing Partnership with India & GE F404
GE Aerospace has collaborated with India for military jet propulsion since the 1980s. In 2004, India selected the F404-IN20 engine for the single-engine Tejas fighter, marking a breakthrough for both India and GE Aerospace.
The F404 engine family is one of the most successful in military aviation history. It powers thousands of combat aircraft worldwide. The F404-IN20 engine, specifically designed for India’s Tejas fighter, features:
- The highest thrust in the F404 family.
- A higher-flow fan for improved performance.
- Unique single-crystal turbine blades for durability.
- Special components tailored for the Indian Air Force’s needs.
GE Aerospace and HAL worked closely to integrate this engine into the Tejas fighter. During its first test flight in 2008, the aircraft climbed to various mission altitudes and achieved Mach 1.1 speed, proving the engine’s capabilities.
Overcoming Production Challenges of GE F404
By 2016, GE Aerospace had delivered 65 F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas LCA. With no new orders, the production line shut down. However, in 2021, HAL placed an additional order for 99 engines, requiring GE to restart the dormant production line.
Restarting jet engine production is complex. Restarting it during the COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of difficulty. GE Aerospace had to:
- Re-engage its global supply chain.
- Ensure high safety and quality standards.
- Overcome supply chain disruptions.
Using its proprietary lean operating model, FLIGHT DECK, GE Aerospace identified bottlenecks and improved manufacturing processes. Close collaboration with suppliers helped accelerate parts production and maintain efficiency.
