India Eyes the Next Gen Multi Launch Rocket System (NGMLRS)

The Indian Army is actively developing the Next Gen Multi Launch Rocket System (NGMLRS) to modernize its artillery capabilities. This ambitious effort marks a shift toward modular, adaptable systems suited for India’s complex terrain. As a result, India aims to unify its rocket artillery under one versatile platform.

NGMLRS to Transform Rocket Artillery in India

Designed for flexibility, the NGMLRS will support 122mm, 214mm, and 300mm rockets, offering compatibility across multiple calibers. By adopting a pod-based architecture, it ensures faster reloading and efficient logistics. Additionally, the system will support future integration of loitering munitions, making it highly versatile.

Bridging Lessons from Global Systems with Indian Realities

Western nations build modular launchers for quick adaptation. In contrast, Russian designs prioritize ruggedness and simplicity. Taking cues from both, India has tailored its artillery to meet local challenges. Indeed, India’s varied geography from deserts to mountains demands a system with broad operational flexibility.

Pinaka’s Evolution and the Road Ahead

The Pinaka system, developed indigenously, laid the foundation for NGMLRS. It now serves as the backbone of Indian rocket artillery. Even so, operational demands are evolving rapidly. Therefore, the Indian Army seeks enhanced range, precision, and automation in the next generation system.

Key Capabilities Driving the NGMLRS Project

Planned features include full automation, GPS-GLONASS-IRNSS navigation, and digital fire control compatible with Project Shakti. Moreover, the launcher will deploy from a 6×6 or 8×8 platform, ensuring mobility across high-altitude areas, deserts, and semi-urban battlefields. Support for smart munitions will further improve lethality.

Emphasis on Indigenous Development and Technological Depth

In line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, the system will include at least 50% indigenous content. Indian firms will collaborate with DRDO to co-develop essential sub-systems. Furthermore, vendors must ensure lifecycle support, built-in diagnostics, and ease of maintenance in field conditions.

Expanding Operational Flexibility and Strategic Reach

The NGMLRS will strike targets deep behind enemy lines while keeping the launcher safe from counter-battery fire. Simultaneously, it allows quick redeployment, giving commanders tactical freedom. This kind of capability significantly strengthens India’s deterrence and response options. Further this system will also be able to fire “Loitering Munitions”.

NGMLRS Marks a “Milestone” in Indian Artillery Modernization

India is now preparing to field the Next Gen Multi Launch Rocket System, a unified, modular, and future-ready launcher. With increased range, automation, and adaptability, it promises to revolutionize Indian rocket artillery. Ultimately, this step represents a bold stride toward self-reliance and modern warfare readiness.
