Bengaluru, India: In an exclusive update accessed by Alpha Defence Team, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has chosen the ANETO–1H engine for the initial development, testing, and integration of the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) and Deck Based Multi Role Helicopter (DBMRH). This decision is pivotal in ensuring the timely progress and success of the IMRH program.
Engine Acquisition and Integration Support
HAL’s Rotary Wing Research and Design Centre (RWRDC) will acquire 12 ANETO–1H engines specifically for the IMRH program. The delivery of these engines is scheduled to commence 24 months from the contract finalization date. Alongside the engines, HAL will receive comprehensive technical support during the integration and flight testing phases, ensuring a streamlined and effective development process.
Considering T0 as the date of the contract, the delivery schedule for the engines will be as follows:
- 2 Engines to be delivered 24 months from T0
- 2 Engines to be delivered 26 months from T0
- 4 Engines to be delivered 30 months from T0
- 4 Engines to be delivered 36 months from T0
This staggered delivery schedule ensures a systematic and phased approach to meeting the contract requirements. It allows for careful planning and resource allocation at each stage, facilitating efficient management of production and delivery processes. Additionally, the intervals between deliveries offer ample time for quality checks and any necessary adjustments, ensuring that all engines meet the specified standards before reaching the client.
By following this schedule, the contract can maintain a steady workflow, minimizing any potential disruptions or delays. It also provides a clear timeline that can be communicated to all stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment throughout the duration of the project. This approach underscores the commitment to delivering high-quality engines in a timely and organized manner, adhering to the agreed-upon terms and thereby fostering client satisfaction and trust.
About the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH)
The IMRH is a medium-lift helicopter under development by HAL to serve the diverse needs of the Indian Armed Forces. Its design accommodates multiple roles, including air assault, air-attack, anti-submarine, anti-surface, military transport, and VIP transport. The IMRH aims to replace the current fleet of Mil Mi-17 and Mil Mi-8 helicopters, enhancing operational capabilities across various missions.
Key specifications of the IMRH include:
- Maximum Takeoff Weight: 13 tonnes
- Main Rotor: Five-bladed
- Tail Rotor: Four-bladed
The naval variant of the IMRH will offer extended range and increased payload capacity, tailored to meet the specific demands of maritime operations. HAL estimates a requirement for over 314 helicopters of this class across the Indian Armed Forces to replace the existing Mil Mi-17 fleet.
Development and Testing Timeline
Scaled model tests for the IMRH have been underway since 2021, with the first flight of a full prototype anticipated in 2025–26. The helicopter’s introduction into the armed forces is expected by 2028, following two years of rigorous testing. HAL plans to produce six prototypes for comprehensive trials before commencing mass production.
Partnership with Safran Helicopter Engines
HAL has been in discussions with Safran Helicopter Engines, a renowned French engine manufacturer, for the joint development and manufacturing of the IMRH engine. On 8 July 2022, HAL and Safran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a joint venture dedicated to the development, production, sales, and support of a new-generation helicopter engine for the IMRH, including its naval variant. This venture will also support future helicopter projects undertaken by HAL and the Ministry of Defence.
Upon completion, HAL will hold the type certificate for the engine, a development process expected to take three years. On 15 February 2023, HAL and Safran formalized a work share agreement outlining the roles and responsibilities of each party in the joint development of the engine. This agreement represents a significant milestone in the collaborative efforts between the two industry giants, combining their expertise and resources to bring this advanced engine to market. The project is expected to leverage cutting-edge technologies and rigorous testing protocols to ensure the engine meets or exceeds global standards. Additionally, it will involve extensive collaboration with various subcontractors and suppliers to streamline the production process and optimize efficiency.
Overall, To maintain momentum and ensure the IMRH program stays on schedule, HAL has opted to use the ANETO–1H engine for the prototypes. This engine will power the initial prototypes and serve as the foundation for the joint development of a new engine with Safran. HAL’s strategic approach underscores its commitment to advancing the IMRH program while leveraging international partnerships to enhance India’s aerospace capabilities.
