The Tethered Multi-copter 1 (T1) is a high-capacity octa-copter designed by DRDO as part of India’s push for indigenous defense innovation. DRDO has launched this project to collaborate with startups and private firms. These firms will receive DRDO’s funding and technical guidance to develop the T1 system. This initiative aligns with India’s goal of self-reliance in defense technology.

Key Features and Technical Specifications

The Tethered Multi-copter 1 is built to meet various operational needs. Its main features include:

  1. Payload Capacity: The T1 can carry a 30 kg payload. This makes it ideal for transporting critical materials in defense operations.
  2. Altitude Range: It operates at altitudes of up to 100 meters Above Ground Level (AGL) and 3,500 meters Mean Sea Level (MSL). This allows the T1 to work in diverse environments.
  3. Wind Speed Endurance: The T1 handles wind speeds up to 30 km/h (8.33 m/s). If the wind exceeds this, it automatically returns to the launch point, reducing risks.
  4. Endurance: It operates for up to 4 hours, enabling long-duration missions, especially for surveillance or logistics.
  5. Safety Features: Several safety measures are in place, including:
  • Automatic return to launch if communication is lost.
  • Return to launch if battery power drops.
  • Precision take-off and landing on designated platforms.

DRDO’s Role in Development

DRDO is driving this Tethered Multi-copter 1 project with a focus on innovation. By funding and mentoring private companies and startups, DRDO ensures that these firms actively participate in designing and testing the T1. This collaboration fosters technological growth and contributes to India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. DRDO’s Research & Development Establishment (Engineers) offers technical support, while private firms take charge of production. This partnership speeds up development and creates a stronger defense ecosystem.

Applications and Utility

This Tethered Multi-copter 1 with high payload capacity and durability make it useful for military logistics, reconnaissance, and emergency response. Its tethered power supply allows extended missions without battery replacements. This feature is particularly valuable in critical operations that require continuous aerial coverage.

Overall, The Tethered Multi-copter 1 (T1) is a significant milestone in India’s journey toward defense self-reliance. DRDO, through this project, is empowering startups and private firms to develop cutting-edge technology. This joint effort not only boosts technological innovation but also strengthens India’s defense capabilities. By involving private sectors, DRDO ensures that India stays on track toward achieving indigenous defense solutions.

Why only 4 hours of endurance if the power supply is tethered?
Ideally it should be a lot more if we connect the power supply to a generator of some sort.
Until the motors of the multicopter gives up it should be able to operate.
