The Indian Air Force (IAF) is on the cusp of enhancing its electronic warfare capabilities with a strategic move to replace obsolescent hardware on Quantity five SAP 518 pods for Su-30MKI aircraft in the pilot phase before taking a fleet-wide upgrade program. This initiative was set in motion with a Request for Information (RFI) released in late 2022.

The Need for Modernization

The equipment slated for replacement targets the SAP 518 pods on Su-30MKI aircraft, essential for electronic warfare operations. The primary goal is to introduce indigenous solutions that not only address obsolescence but also elevate reliability and performance. This endeavor aligns with the IAF’s continuous quest for state-of-the-art technology, leveraging modern modular architecture to meet current and future operational demands effectively.

Methodology and Execution Plan

The methodology outlined for this critical upgrade involves a phased process, starting with the development of a Lab Model and SoFT prototypes by the selected firm, subject to stringent testing and certification by IAF/CEMILAC. The phased approach encompasses design reviews, prototype development, functional testing, in-flight validation, and obtaining necessary clearances. Each phase is planned to ensure seamless integration and operational readiness within a tight timeline of 12 months from contract signing.

DRDO’s Role in Advancing EW Capabilities

Driving this technological leap is the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) premier lab, CASDIC, which has spearheaded the development of Pod-based Advanced Wing Tip Jammer Pods under Project Atmarakshak (ARK). A key component of these pods is the Active Phased Array Sub-System (APASS), showcasing cutting-edge advancements in electronic warfare systems tailored for the Su-30MKI aircraft. The system will have two win mounted GaN based pods that will be capable of performing self protection jamming and escort jamming based on the requirements.

Industry Collaboration and Compliance

The endeavor has witnessed active participation from leading industrial partners, including Astra Microwave Products Ltd, Data Patterns, and RFMW Innovation Labs, among others. Notably, three bidders have demonstrated full compliance with the RFP terms and conditions, underscoring a robust collaboration framework aimed at delivering high-quality solutions within specified timelines. Initially six industry partners were willing to receive the technology transfer and execute the process.

Project Roadmap and Future Prospects

With the project’s PDC slated for October 27, 2024, and a streamlined delivery period thereafter, stakeholders are poised to witness tangible advancements in the IAF’s electronic warfare capabilities. This initiative not only addresses immediate operational needs but also lays the foundation for sustained technological prowess and strategic advantage in the realm of electronic warfare.
