Zorawar is India’s indigenous light tank, jointly developed by DRDO and Larsen & Toubro specifically to give the Army a highly mobile, air-transportable armoured platform suited to high-altitude mountain warfare, particularly along the Ladakh sector facing China. Developed in a remarkably compact roughly two-year timeframe, Zorawar entered Army user trials in early 2026 and is expected to be inducted by 2027.[1]
The requirement for a dedicated light tank emerged directly from operational lessons of the 2020 Ladakh standoff with China, during which the Indian Army found itself without a tank optimised for the extreme altitude, thin air, and difficult terrain of the region — existing tanks like the T-72 and T-90 being heavier and less suited to rapid deployment and manoeuvre in high mountain passes. Zorawar, named after 19th-century general Zorawar Singh who led military campaigns into the Tibetan plateau, was conceived to fill this specific capability gap.[2]
DRDO and L&T developed Zorawar in a notably compressed timeframe of roughly two years, reflecting the operational urgency attached to the programme. Developmental trials began at L&T’s Hazira manufacturing complex and continued at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner for desert-condition testing, followed by high-altitude trials conducted at Nyoma in Ladakh, at elevations exceeding 4,200 metres, to validate the tank’s performance in the extreme cold and thin air it is specifically designed for.[3]
Zorawar is equipped with a 105mm main gun, an integrated anti-tank guided missile launcher, and a modular protection suite that can be adapted based on threat environment and mission requirements. In late 2025, the tank successfully test-fired the Nag Mk-II anti-tank guided missile, demonstrating a significant lethality enhancement for the platform.[4]
The tank is being evaluated with both an imported Cummins-Allison engine-transmission combination and an indigenous power pack under development by DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment, reflecting an effort to maximise indigenous content in the final production configuration while ensuring the powerpack can reliably operate in the extreme high-altitude conditions the tank is designed for.[4]
DRDO Chief Dr. Samir V. Kamat confirmed that the Indian Army would begin formal user trials of Zorawar across diverse terrains starting in early 2026, structured in two main phases: high-altitude cold trials focused on mountain passes in Ladakh to assess mobility, crew ergonomics, and systems reliability in freezing, low-oxygen conditions, followed by summer trials at the Pokhran field firing ranges in Rajasthan to test endurance and cooling systems in extreme desert heat.[5]
India has granted additional prototype development funding to industry partners including Tata and Mahindra as the broader light tank programme has progressed, reflecting a competitive, multi-vendor approach to maturing India’s light tank capability even as the DRDO-L&T Zorawar design leads the current trials process.[6]
The Army plans to incorporate requested modifications from the trials process into a first production tranche of 59 Zorawar tanks, which are expected to be ordered immediately upon successful completion of user trials, with induction targeted for 2027 — a deliberately tight timeline intended to close the light tank capability gap as quickly as possible given the ongoing strategic significance of the Ladakh sector.[1]
