The T-90S “Bhishma” is the main battle tank (MBT) of the Indian Army, a licence-built variant of Russia’s T-90S developed from the T-72 lineage and fitted with a battlefield management system, explosive reactive armour, and a 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles.[1] Named after Bhishma, the warrior-patriarch of the Mahabharata, the type forms the backbone of India’s armoured corps, with more than 1,000 tanks in frontline service alongside the indigenous Arjun and the older T-72 Ajeya.[9] Since its induction in 2004 the Bhishma has been progressively upgraded through the Mk-2 and Mk-3 standards, each adding indigenous fire-control, protection, and mobility improvements developed by DRDO, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board.[2]
India’s search for a T-72 successor in the 1990s culminated in a February 2001 contract with Russia for 310 T-90S tanks, structured in three parts: 124 tanks supplied fully built, 186 supplied in completely knocked down (CKD) and semi-knocked down (SKD) kits for local assembly, and a transfer of technology (ToT) package enabling full licence production in India.[7] According to Russian officials, the T-90 was selected over Ukraine’s competing T-84 offer in the 2001 evaluation.[13] The Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi, near Chennai, rolled out its first licence-built T-90S on 7 January 2004, with ten more delivered by the end of that year as local tooling and skills ramped up.[7] Follow-on contracts in 2006 (330 tanks) and 2007 (347 tanks) expanded the programme toward a cumulative order for roughly 1,000 licence-built tanks, though persistent technology-transfer friction with Russia and quality-control issues at Avadi slowed the production ramp through much of the 2000s and 2010s.[7] The programme reached a symbolic milestone in May 2026, when HVF Avadi delivered its 1,000th indigenously assembled T-90 Bhishma, marking 25 years of India-Russia cooperation on the type.[11] Deliveries and upgrades continue in parallel, with the Army separately negotiating additional T-90MS-standard tanks and associated technology packages from Russia.[8]
The Bhishma retains the classic low-silhouette, three-man Soviet-lineage layout, with an autoloaded 125 mm 2A46M-5 smoothbore main gun, a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, and an optional remotely controlled 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun on the commander’s cupola.[5] The main gun can fire standard armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding-sabot (APFSDS), high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT), and high-explosive fragmentation rounds, as well as the 9M119 Refleks (NATO: AT-11 Sniper) laser-guided anti-tank missile through the barrel, giving the tank an engagement range against armour and low-flying helicopters well beyond that of a conventional gun round.[1] Protection is built around welded steel and composite armour overlaid with Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour (ERA) blocks, supplemented on later-standard tanks by a defensive aids suite and collective protection against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.[1] Mobility is provided by a 1,000 horsepower V-92S2 multi-fuel diesel engine (licence-produced in India), driving the 46-to-50-tonne-class hull to a road speed of about 60 km/h and a range of roughly 550 km on internal fuel.[5] Weight has crept upward across upgrade standards as additional armour, electronics, and add-on protection have been fitted, with the most heavily protected Mk-3 tanks reported at around 50.7 tonnes combat weight.[5]
The T-90 Bhishma Mk-3 standard, which began entering service in 2024, is the most extensive indigenous rework of the type to date. It introduces a mid-wave infrared thermal imaging commander’s sight with an engagement/detection range of roughly 8 km, developed jointly by DRDO and BEL; an automatic target tracker; and a digital ballistic computer adapted from the indigenous Arjun programme, together intended to raise first-round hit probability against moving targets.[2] The Mk-3 also carries a claimed 83 percent indigenous content by value, including a fully indigenised version of the V-92S2 engine, and is fitted with additional passive and reactive armour packages.[2] The Defence Acquisition Council has separately approved the procurement of uprated 1,350 horsepower engines to restore the tank’s power-to-weight ratio as add-on armour has increased hull weight, with particular emphasis on sustaining mobility in the thin air and steep gradients of high-altitude sectors such as eastern Ladakh, where T-90s have been forward-deployed since the 2020 border stand-off with China.[4] DRDO has also been developing an indigenous hard-kill active protection system (APS) for the Bhishma fleet, first publicly displayed at Aero India 2025, using four X-band radar antenna panels for 360-degree threat coverage paired with turret-mounted interceptor munitions to defeat incoming anti-tank rockets and missiles before impact.[2] Some sources also credit the Mk-3 upgrade package with a Saab-derived LEDS-150 active protection option evaluated alongside the indigenous system.[2] At the 2026 Army Day and Republic Day parades, the Army publicly displayed T-90S Bhishmas fitted with new rubber-reinforced composite track assemblies—visually and mechanically similar to those used on the Arjun MBT—replacing the older parallel-double-pin all-steel track. The new tracks are intended to cut vibration, noise, and road wear, and to improve crew comfort and component life on extended road marches.[4] Public reporting in mid-2026 has also linked ongoing Bhishma upgrade work to counter-drone measures, reflecting the Army’s broader effort to harden its armoured formations against first-person-view (FPV) drone attack following lessons drawn from the Russia-Ukraine war.[3]
The Indian Bhishma fleet spans three broad generations. The baseline T-90S comprises the original imported and early licence-built tanks delivered from 2001 through the mid-2000s, essentially matching the export-standard Russian configuration.[9] The T-90 “Bhishma” Mk-2 (sometimes referred to informally as an interim upgrade standard) introduced improved fire-control and electronic components during the 2010s production run at Avadi. The current-production T-90 Bhishma Mk-3, entering service from 2024, integrates the Arjun-derived fire-control suite, uprated protection, higher indigenous content, and is the baseline onto which the 2025-2026 engine, track, and active-protection upgrades are being fitted.[2] India has, at various points, also evaluated the more advanced Russian T-90MS export standard—featuring a new turret, panoramic commander’s sight, and uprated engine—for potential future production or upgrade of the existing fleet, though large-scale adoption has not been confirmed.[8]
The original 2001 contract for 310 tanks was followed by supplementary orders of 330 tanks in 2006 and 347 tanks in 2007, taking the cumulative licence-production programme toward roughly 1,000 units built at HVF Avadi under transfer-of-technology arrangements with Russia’s Uralvagonzavod.[7] That milestone was reached in May 2026 with the delivery of the 1,000th indigenously assembled hull, 25 years after the original agreement was signed.[11] Independent estimates, such as the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance, have placed total Indian Army T-90S/Bhishma holdings at upward of 1,000-1,025 tanks once earlier imported batches are included alongside licence-built hulls.[9] Russia has continued to pitch further collaboration, including possible local production of the newer T-90MS standard, as an avenue to sustain the Avadi production line and deepen technology transfer beyond the original agreement.[8]
Licence production at Avadi was, for much of the 2000s and 2010s, dogged by delays that Indian officials and analysts attributed variously to technology-transfer bottlenecks, quality-control shortfalls in indigenous components, and what some accounts describe as Russian reluctance to fully share sensitive sub-system technology.[7] The programme’s continuing reliance on Russian-origin engines, fire-control components, and ammunition types has also drawn scrutiny since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which strained Moscow’s own defence-industrial capacity and complicated spares logistics for Russian-origin platforms operated by India, roughly 70 percent of whose legacy equipment traces to Russian or Soviet origin.[12] India has in turn accelerated a formal indigenisation list for T-90 and T-72 line-replaceable units and sub-systems, moving strategically important spares to Indian suppliers rather than continued import.[12] Separately, at least one captured or damaged Bhishma-derived T-90 hull has been reported by open-source defence outlets as having surfaced in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, illustrating the shared supply and technology lineage between the Indian and Russian T-90 fleets even as the two programmes have diverged in upgrade path since 2014.[3]
The Bhishma has not been used in a shooting war to date, but it forms the principal strike-armour element of Indian Army formations along the western border with Pakistan (Rajasthan and Punjab sectors) and has been progressively forward-based in eastern Ladakh since the 2020 border stand-off with China, where its high-altitude mobility and cold-weather performance have driven several of the ongoing engine and track upgrades.[4] The type is regularly exercised in large-scale Army manoeuvres such as Him Vijay and various Strike Corps exercises, and upgraded Mk-3 tanks with new track assemblies were showcased publicly at the 2026 Army Day and Republic Day parades in New Delhi.[4]
