The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a long-range, twin-engine air superiority and multirole fighter jointly developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and remains the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet nearly a quarter-century after its induction. With roughly 260 aircraft in service, it is the IAF’s most numerous fighter type and has been at the centre of an ambitious “Super Sukhoi” modernisation programme aimed at extending its relevance well into the 2030s and beyond.[1]

Origins and Initial Order

In November 1996, India placed an order with Sukhoi for eight Su-30K fighters and 32 Su-30MKI aircraft, launching what would become one of the largest and longest-running fighter procurement and licence-production programmes in Indian military history. The first Su-30Ks entered service in June 1997 as an interim measure, later replaced by the definitive MKI variant once it matured.[2]

Induction and Licence Production

The first ten Russian-built Su-30MKI aircraft were delivered to the IAF in mid-2002, entering formal service in September 2002 with the newly formed 20 Squadron “Desert Tigers” at Halwara Air Force Station in Punjab, giving the Western Air Command its first squadron of the type. In December 2000, HAL signed a licence-production agreement with Rosoboronexport to build 140 Su-30MKI aircraft domestically in four phases, with the first HAL-assembled aircraft rolled out in November 2004 and delivered to the IAF in March 2005. HAL’s total licence-production run eventually grew to 222 aircraft, bringing the IAF’s total operational fleet to roughly 260 Su-30MKIs — by far its largest single fighter type.[3]

Role and Capabilities

Designed as a long-range air-superiority fighter capable of all-weather air combat and ground-attack missions, the Su-30MKI’s large airframe, thrust-vectoring engines, and long range have made it the IAF’s platform of choice for missions requiring extended reach, heavy payload, or multi-role flexibility, including as the primary carrier platform for the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile.[1]

Combat Use: Operation Sindoor (2025)

During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Su-30MKIs were employed alongside Rafale and Jaguar aircraft in long-range strikes using BrahMos, SCALP-EG, and Rampage weapons against sites deep inside Pakistani territory, while separately conducting beyond-visual-range air-to-air engagements using the indigenous Astra missile — including what was reported as the type’s first confirmed combat use of an Astra missile in anger.[4] Indian and Pakistani systems reportedly attempted to disrupt IAF operations during the conflict, underscoring the increasingly contested electronic and information environment surrounding modern air operations between the two countries.[4]

The “Super Sukhoi” Upgrade Programme

India has committed to an ambitious modernisation of its Su-30MKI fleet, popularly termed “Super Sukhoi,” under which nearly 75 percent of the fleet — around 200 aircraft — will receive a comprehensive 4.7-generation upgrade package, beginning with an initial batch of 84 jets followed by two further phases.[5] The upgrade is intended to transform a late-1990s-era airframe design into a fighter with capabilities exceeding many current 4.5-generation types, incorporating a modernised AI-assisted cockpit, new mission computers, and expanded weapons integration.[5]

Virupaksha AESA Radar

Central to the Super Sukhoi upgrade is the indigenous Virupaksha Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based system built around approximately 2,400 transmit/receive modules, intended to replace the ageing Russian-origin N011M Bars passive electronically scanned radar currently fitted to the fleet. Virupaksha offers a detection range of roughly 250–300 km, low-probability-of-intercept operating modes to reduce the risk of the radar itself being detected, and the ability to simultaneously track up to 40 targets — a substantial leap over the Bars radar’s original capability.[6] The radar completed its first power-on test in February 2026, marking a key milestone toward flight integration.[6]

Weapons Modernisation

Upgraded Su-30MKIs are being integrated with the Astra family of air-to-air missiles as their primary BVR armament — Astra Mk1 offering roughly 160 km range, with the forthcoming Astra Mk2 extending this to around 220 km — alongside BrahMos-NG, a lighter, more compact version of the BrahMos cruise missile intended to allow the Su-30MKI to carry multiple missiles per sortie rather than the single BrahMos-A currently carried.[7]

Indigenisation Push

The broader Su-30MKI fleet-sustainment effort has also emphasised increasing indigenous content in engines, spares, and overhaul work, with India targeting substantially higher domestic content across the fleet’s maintenance and upgrade pipeline as HAL’s original licence-production run winds down and shifts toward long-term repair, overhaul, and upgrade support instead.[8]

Strategic Significance

As the IAF’s largest and most versatile fighter fleet, the Su-30MKI’s continued relevance is central to India’s air power for the foreseeable future; the Super Sukhoi programme reflects a deliberate strategy of extending and modernising this large existing fleet rather than relying solely on new acquisitions, given the scale of investment already made in airframes, infrastructure, and training built around the type.[5]
