The Pinaka is an indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army, named after the bow of the Hindu deity Shiva.[1] Mounted on a Tatra-derived truck chassis, a single launcher fires a salvo of 12 high-explosive rockets in under 45 seconds, giving Indian artillery formations a saturation-fire capability that complements towed and self-propelled gun-howitzers.[1] Successive Pinaka variants have progressively extended range from an original 40 km to a guided variant capable of striking beyond 120 km, and the system became India’s first major indigenous rocket-artillery export when Armenia placed an order in 2022.[6]

Development History

Pinaka development began at DRDO in December 1986 with a sanctioned budget of roughly ₹26.47 crore, targeting completion by December 1992, though the programme, like many DRDO efforts of the period, ran well past its original schedule.[7] The system’s combat value was demonstrated early: two Pinaka Mk-I launchers were rushed into service and deployed with the 121 Rocket Regiment during the 1999 Kargil War, even as formal user trials of the Mk-I continued through the year, and the system’s saturation-fire effect against Pakistani positions on the high ridgelines was credited with helping accelerate its full induction.[7] The first dedicated Pinaka regiment was formally raised in February 2000, and production was subsequently licensed to Indian industry, with Tata Power Strategic Electronics Division (now Tata Advanced Systems) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) signing a $45 million, 40-launcher contract with the Army in March 2006 to begin large-scale manufacture.[7]

Design and Features

Each Pinaka launcher carries two pods of six 214 mm rockets on a high-mobility truck chassis, capable of ripple-firing all twelve rockets in under 45 seconds and saturating an area target with high-explosive, cluster, or other specialised warheads.[1] The original Mk-I had a range of about 40 km; the enhanced Mk-I (Pinaka-ER) extended this to roughly 45 km, and the definitive Pinaka Mk-II Extended Range variant pushes range out to approximately 75-90 km, with the associated Guided Pinaka rocket adding inertial-navigation and satellite guidance to strike beyond 75 km with a circular error probable (CEP) of well under 100 metres, a dramatic improvement in precision over the unguided original.[1] A battery-level automated Command Post and fire-control system enables rapid, coordinated targeting and firing across multiple launchers, reducing the time from target detection to rocket impact.[1]

Modernisation and Future Development

DRDO and the Army have continued to push Pinaka’s range envelope well beyond its original battlefield-rocket role. A Long Range Guided Rocket variant with a 120 km range was cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council in a project worth roughly ₹2,500 crore ($260 million), designed to be compatible with existing in-service Pinaka launchers rather than requiring new hardware.[4] Beyond that, DRDO disclosed in January 2024 that it was developing further variants with ranges of 120 km and more than 200 km, and by February 2026 reporting indicated the organisation was even scoping a 450 km-range Pinaka derivative—a range bracket that would begin to blur the traditional distinction between long-range rocket artillery and short-range ballistic/cruise missile systems.[4] In parallel, the Army has tasked Tata Advanced Systems and L&T with a wider upgrade and sustenance programme for the existing Pinaka fleet, covering fire-control modernisation and life-extension work on launchers already in service.[8]

Variants

The family spans the baseline Pinaka Mk-I (~40 km), the enhanced Mk-I (ER) (~45 km), the Pinaka Mk-II Extended Range (~75-90 km), the Guided Pinaka (satellite/INS-guided, >75 km, high precision), and the emerging Long Range Guided Rocket variant targeting 120 km and beyond, compatible with the existing launcher fleet.[1] DRDO’s longer-term roadmap envisions further derivatives reaching 200 km and potentially 450 km.[4]

Procurement and Cost

Following the 2006 Tata/L&T production contract, the Army has continued to order successive Pinaka regiments equipped with progressively longer-range rocket variants, alongside dedicated ammunition-production contracts placed with Solar Industries, Munitions India Limited, and Yantra India Limited.[7] The 2025-26 Long Range Guided Rocket programme alone represents an approximately ₹2,500 crore commitment, on top of the ongoing Tata/L&T fleet-sustenance contract disclosed in January 2026.[4][8] Internationally, Armenia signed a combined package worth roughly ₹2,000 crore (about $222-250 million) covering four Pinaka batteries plus associated ammunition and support, with deliveries beginning in July 2023 and continuing through 2024-2026, including a maiden shipment of Guided Pinaka pods reported by Yantra India Limited in March 2026.[6]

Logistics and Criticism

Pinaka’s long and initially slow development cycle in the late 1980s and 1990s mirrored broader criticisms of DRDO-era artillery programmes for schedule overruns, though the system’s Kargil War combat debut is widely credited with validating the underlying design and accelerating its full-scale induction and export success.[7] As the range of Pinaka variants has extended toward 120-450 km, some analysts have noted the programme increasingly overlaps in role with India’s shorter-range guided-missile systems, raising questions about doctrine, cost-effectiveness, and export-control classification as rocket artillery approaches missile-equivalent ranges.[4] The Armenia export deal has also drawn geopolitical attention, being read by regional analysts as a significant shift in South Caucasus arms-supply dynamics and a marker of India’s growing defence-export ambitions.[5]

Operational History

Pinaka’s combat debut came in June 1999, when two launchers of the 121 Rocket Regiment were deployed during the Kargil War, providing area-saturation fire support against entrenched positions on the high ridgelines.[7] Since the first regiment’s raising in 2000, the system has been progressively fielded across multiple Army rocket regiments and used extensively in large-scale exercises. Internationally, Armenia became the type’s first foreign operator, receiving batteries and guided-rocket pods under a multi-year contract that began deliveries in 2023 and continued into 2026, marking Pinaka’s emergence as one of India’s flagship defence-export products.[6]
