The Kolkata-class, designated Project 15A by the Indian Navy, is a class of three indigenously designed and built stealth guided-missile destroyers intended to give India blue-water, multi-domain combat capability spanning surface warfare, air defence, and anti-submarine operations. The class represents a major step up in indigenous surface-combatant design over the preceding Delhi-class destroyers.[1]
Project 15A was developed as a follow-on to the Delhi-class (Project 15) destroyers, incorporating improved stealth shaping, more advanced sensors, and a significantly upgraded weapons suite centred on Indo-Russian and Indo-Israeli missile systems. All three ships were designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The lead ship, INS Kolkata, was commissioned on 16 August 2014, followed by INS Kochi on 30 September 2015 and INS Chennai on 21 November 2016.
Each Kolkata-class destroyer measures 163 metres in length with a beam of 17.4 metres and a draught of 6.5 metres, displacing approximately 7,400 tonnes at full load and carrying a crew complement of around 360 personnel. The design incorporates extensive radar cross-section reduction measures, reflecting a deliberate move toward stealth shaping in Indian warship design.[2]
The class’s primary offensive punch comes from 16 BrahMos supersonic anti-ship/land-attack cruise missiles, housed in two eight-cell universal vertical launch modules positioned forward of the superstructure. The naval variant of BrahMos, jointly developed by India and Russia, reaches speeds of Mach 2.8-3.0 and has an operational range of approximately 290 km, giving the destroyers a formidable long-range strike capability against both surface ships and land targets.
Air defence is provided by two 4×8-cell vertical launching systems carrying up to 32 Barak-8 (MRSAM) medium-to-long-range surface-to-air missiles, jointly developed by India’s DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries. In May 2019, two Kolkata-class ships conducted the maiden cooperative-engagement firing of the Barak-8/MRSAM using Joint Taskforce Coordination (JTC) mode, successfully intercepting multiple simultaneous aerial targets across two complex extended-range scenarios. The demonstration made the Indian Navy the second naval service in the world after the United States, and the first in Asia, to develop and deploy this networked cooperative air-defence engagement capability.[3]
Each ship carries a 76mm naval gun forward of the bridge for surface engagement, naval gunfire support, and limited anti-air use, backed by four AK-630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for point defence against missiles and aircraft. Anti-submarine warfare capability is provided by four torpedo tubes and two RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers, supported by hull-mounted and towed-array sonar suites and an integrated combat management system that fuses sensor and weapons data across the ship.
The Kolkata-class carries a hangar and flight deck capable of embarking two multi-role helicopters, typically the Kamov Ka-28 or the more recent MH-60R Seahawk, extending the ship’s anti-submarine and surveillance reach well beyond its own sensor and weapons range.
As the Indian Navy’s most capable indigenously built destroyer class at the time of commissioning, the Kolkata-class serves as escort for India’s carrier battle groups and as an independent power-projection and area-denial asset in its own right. The class’s design lineage directly informed the follow-on Visakhapatnam-class (Project 15B) destroyers, embedding lessons learned in construction, stealth shaping, and systems integration into the next generation of Indian surface combatants.
