The K9 Vajra-T (“Thunderbolt”) is a 155 mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer built for the Indian Army by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in partnership with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, as a localised variant of the Hanwha K9 Thunder.[1] Inducted from 2018, the type was India’s first major artillery platform manufactured in the private sector, and it has since become the backbone of the Army’s tracked self-propelled artillery, with further large expansion orders under negotiation as of 2026.[7]
India’s requirement for a tracked, desert-capable self-propelled howitzer led the Ministry of Defence to run a global competitive tender, which L&T won in 2017 by offering a customised K9 Thunder co-developed with Hanwha (then Samsung Techwin/Hanwha Techwin) and adapted for Indian conditions, including higher ambient temperatures and dust ingress typical of the western desert sectors.[5] The Ministry signed a contract for 100 K9 Vajra-T platforms worth roughly Rs 4,366 crore (about $646 million) in March 2017, with L&T executing the programme at its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.[5] The entire 100-gun order was delivered by 2021, ahead of the original schedule, marking one of the more successful large-calibre artillery inductions in recent Indian procurement history.[5] Follow-on orders have continued the programme: in December 2024 the MoD signed a further Rs 7,629 crore ($895 million) contract with L&T for 100 additional K9 Vajra-T guns, and by mid-2026 the Army was reportedly moving toward acquiring up to 300 more tracked self-propelled howitzers, worth an estimated ₹23,000 crore, to further modernise artillery on both the Pakistan and China fronts.[8]
The K9 Vajra-T carries a 155 mm/52-calibre ordnance on a tracked chassis, giving it a maximum range of roughly 40 km with standard ammunition and further with extended-range/base-bleed rounds.[1] An automated ammunition-handling and loading system allows a burst rate of three rounds in 15 seconds and a sustained rate of six to eight rounds per minute for up to three minutes, and the gun supports Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) fire missions, in which several shells fired at different trajectories and velocities land on the same target at the same moment.[1] Mobility is provided by an MTU MT 881 Ka-500 8-cylinder diesel engine producing roughly 1,000 hp, paired with an Allison ATDX1100-5A3 transmission, giving a road speed of up to 67 km/h and a cruising range of about 360 km.[1] The Indian variant differs from the baseline South Korean K9 primarily in its air-conditioning, filtration, and other sub-systems adapted for high-temperature desert operation, as well as an indigenous suite of communications and fire-control components integrated by L&T and Indian public and private-sector suppliers.[3]
Beyond the base desert configuration, the K9 Vajra-T programme has been extended toward high-altitude operation: the Army has trialled the type in Ladakh, assessing performance on steep gradients, in low temperatures, and in the rarefied air of high-altitude terrain, as part of a broader push to give mechanised artillery a role in the eastern Ladakh sector facing China.[6] Indigenous content has also risen across successive contracts; L&T states that more than 80 percent of the howitzer’s production is now handled domestically at Hazira, accounting for more than half of the platform’s total cost, reducing dependence on Hanwha-sourced components with each follow-on batch.[2] The prospective 300-gun expansion under consideration in 2026 is expected to further localise production and extend deployment to additional Strike Corps formations.[7]
The K9 Vajra-T is itself the Indian-customised variant of the South Korean K9 Thunder, distinguished mainly by climate-control, filtration, and sub-system changes for desert operation.[3] India has not publicly fielded a separate “Mk2” designation; instead, successive production batches (the original 100-gun 2017 contract and the 2024 100-gun follow-on) have incrementally increased indigenous content and minor sub-system upgrades while retaining a common baseline configuration.[8]
The original 2017 contract covered 100 guns for approximately Rs 4,366 crore ($646 million).[5] The December 2024 follow-on order added a further 100 guns for Rs 7,629 crore ($895 million), reflecting both inflation and the higher indigenous-content requirement placed on the newer batch.[4] As of mid-2026, the Army and Ministry of Defence were reportedly weighing a further procurement of up to 300 additional K9 Vajra-T-type guns, worth an estimated ₹23,000 crore, which if approved would roughly quadruple the fleet from its current 200-gun strength.[7]
The K9 Vajra-T programme is broadly regarded as one of the more successful examples of private-sector defence manufacturing under India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) push, having delivered its first 100-gun order on or ahead of schedule with comparatively few of the delays that have affected other tracked-platform programmes.[4] Sustained reliance on South Korean-sourced sub-systems in earlier batches drew some scrutiny, prompting the higher indigenisation targets built into the 2024 follow-on contract; publicly available reporting has not identified major operational or reliability criticisms of the type in Indian service to date.[2]
K9 Vajra-T regiments have been progressively fielded with Indian Army Strike Corps formations along the western border with Pakistan since 2018, with extensive desert-environment trials conducted in the Rajasthan sector to validate performance in extreme heat and dust.[6] The type has not been used in combat, but has taken part in numerous large-scale field exercises, and has more recently been evaluated for high-altitude deployment in Ladakh as part of India’s post-2020 reinforcement of the eastern border with China.[6]
