INDRA (Indian Doppler Radar), also known as the Low Flying Detection Radar, is a family of 2D mobile surveillance radars developed by LRDE/DRDO for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, produced in series by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). INDRA-I was a landmark programme for DRDO — its first large radar system designed in-house and produced in numbers for the armed forces.[1]
INDRA-I is a 2D mobile surveillance radar optimised for low-level target detection, housed across two wheeled vehicles for road mobility. It features automated Track-While-Scan (TWS), integrated IFF, and a high scan rate suited to detecting fast, low-flying targets. The Indian Air Force has fielded around thirty INDRA-I units, with the Indian Army also operating a number of the type.[1]
INDRA-II is an L-band low-flying detection radar developed for ground-controlled interception (GCI), filling a critical gap-filler role within India’s layered air-defence radar network. It uses pulse compression to detect low-flying aircraft against heavy ground clutter, combined with high range resolution and electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) capability. The IAF has ordered seven INDRA-II units.[1]
Across the INDRA family, radars provide detection range up to roughly 90 km with height coverage from about 35 m to 3,000 m (subject to radar horizon), and can handle up to 200 simultaneous tracks.[1]
