The HAL Dhruv is India’s indigenously developed multi-role utility helicopter, in service since 2002 across the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard, and armed with a variant (Rudra) for the Army. Over more than two decades of service the type has logged over 450,000 flight hours, but has also faced sustained scrutiny over a series of crashes, culminating in a fleet-wide grounding in early 2025 following a fatal accident.[1]
Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Dhruv was designed as a modern, twin-engine utility helicopter capable of serving across all three armed services and the Coast Guard in transport, reconnaissance, and (in armed Rudra form) light attack roles. It entered service in 2002, giving India a broadly capable indigenous helicopter across a wide range of military and paramilitary missions.[1]
Across roughly 23 years of service, the Dhruv fleet experienced 28 recorded crashes: 13 attributed to technical faults, 13 to human error, and two to undetermined causes, according to fleet-wide safety reviews. While this accident rate has been debated in the context of the fleet’s very large total flight-hour base, individual high-profile crashes have repeatedly drawn public and parliamentary attention to the type’s safety record.[2]
In January 2025, a Coast Guard Dhruv crashed at Porbandar airport in Gujarat, killing two pilots and an aircrew diver. The subsequent investigation identified a fracture in the helicopter’s swashplate — a critical flight-control component that governs rotor blade pitch — as a probable factor, and follow-up fleet-wide inspections found similar swashplate cracking in other airframes, particularly those operating in saline maritime environments where corrosion and material fatigue are accelerated.[3] In response, the entire Dhruv fleet of more than 330 helicopters across all four operating services was grounded pending investigation — one of the most extensive groundings in Indian military aviation history.[3]
Following a thorough safety review, the Army and Air Force variants of the Dhruv fleet — which use a skid landing gear rather than the wheeled undercarriage used by naval variants — were cleared for full operations roughly four months after the grounding, resuming flights in May 2025. The Navy and Coast Guard fleets, which operate in the more corrosive maritime environment implicated in the swashplate cracking, remained grounded for longer as a more cautious, staged return to service was pursued.[4]
The swashplate issue and repeated groundings have prompted renewed public debate over whether the Dhruv’s fundamental design requires more substantial rework rather than incremental fixes, with some commentary questioning whether the helicopter’s maritime-environment durability was adequately addressed in its original engineering, particularly for naval and Coast Guard variants operating routinely over salt water.[5]
Dhruv’s most prominent export effort, a sale of seven helicopters to the Ecuadorian Air Force in 2008–09 for approximately $42.5 million, ended in failure: four of the seven helicopters crashed in the years following delivery, and two further crashes within a fortnight of each other in January 2015 led Ecuador to ground its remaining fleet and terminate the contract, citing safety concerns, parts-delivery problems, and the accident rate. The episode became a significant setback for India’s broader ambitions to export the Dhruv and damaged the type’s international reputation, complicating subsequent export marketing efforts.[6]
The armed Rudra variant, operated by Indian Army Aviation, adds a chin-mounted turret gun, rocket pods, and anti-tank guided missile capability to the base Dhruv airframe, giving Army Aviation an indigenous light attack and reconnaissance helicopter distinct from the dedicated HAL Prachand attack helicopter.[1]
Despite its safety controversies, Dhruv remains India’s most numerous indigenous helicopter type and a foundational programme for HAL’s rotary-wing design expertise, directly informing subsequent programmes including the Prachand attack helicopter and the Light Utility Helicopter. Resolving the swashplate and broader durability concerns is widely viewed as essential both for continued domestic service confidence and for any renewed export ambitions.[2]
