Nishant is a short-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) for the Indian Army, designed primarily for battlefield reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and artillery-fire correction over forward tactical areas.[1]
Unlike runway-dependent UAVs, Nishant was designed for rail-launch from a hydro-pneumatic launcher mounted on a vehicle, allowing operation from unprepared forward areas without requiring an airstrip. Recovery was via parachute onto an airbag system, reflecting the same land-locked, forward-deployed operating philosophy driving much of the Army’s early tactical UAV requirement. Its payload comprised electro-optical and infrared sensors for day/night reconnaissance and battlefield surveillance.[1]
Nishant entered limited Indian Army service but suffered a series of crashes during its operational life, which affected confidence in the type and contributed to the Army’s subsequent preference for more modern tactical UAVs and, later, imported and indigenous mini-UAV/quadcopter systems for immediate battlefield ISR needs. Despite its operational limitations, Nishant represented an important step in India’s early indigenous tactical UAV development, informing subsequent DRDO UAV programmes.[1]
