Derby and Python-5 are Israeli-origin air-to-air missiles manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, integrated on the HAL Tejas and other IAF fighter types to provide beyond-visual-range and high-agility close-combat engagement capability respectively.[1]

Derby — Medium-Range BVR Missile

Derby is a radar-guided, active-homing beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile with an estimated range in excess of 50 km. Rafael’s extended-range derivative, I-Derby ER, extends this to roughly 100 km (54 nautical miles), giving Tejas and other Derby-equipped fighters a substantially longer BVR reach. Derby was the first Israeli-origin air-to-air missile integrated on the Tejas platform.[1][2]

Python-5 — High-Off-Boresight IR Missile

Python-5 is an imaging-infrared-guided, high-off-boresight short-range air-to-air missile believed to have a range of at least 20 km, measuring 120 in (10 ft) in length with a 64 cm span, weighing 105 kg with an 11 kg high-explosive warhead. Its fifth-generation imaging seeker provides “full-sphere launch capability” with lock-on-after-launch, allowing pilots to engage targets across almost the entire surrounding hemisphere rather than only within a narrow forward cone, with strong resistance to infrared countermeasures and target manoeuvring.[3]

Tejas Integration

On 27 April 2021, the Tejas Mk1 successfully test-fired the Python-5, becoming the world’s first Light Combat Aircraft-class fighter to demonstrate the missile, with both Derby and Python-5 achieving successful hits — including a direct hit by Derby on a high-speed manoeuvring target — validating the pairing’s full capability on the Tejas weapons envelope.[4][1]
