The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) is a 155 mm/52-calibre towed howitzer developed indigenously by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL, a subsidiary of Bharat Forge). Formally named Amogh in Indian Army service, ATAGS set world records for towed-artillery range during its 2017 trials and has since been cleared for large-scale induction as one of the Army’s principal new-generation long-range guns.[1]
The ATAGS programme began in 2013 as a DRDO-led effort to design a fully indigenous 155 mm/52-calibre gun capable of outperforming existing towed artillery in Indian service, developed jointly through a public-private partnership model pairing ARDE’s design authority with Tata Advanced Systems and Kalyani/Bharat Forge as production partners—two competing private-sector prototypes were developed in parallel before elements were consolidated.[6] DRDO conducted the proof-firing of the gun’s armament on 14 July 2016, and the system was first publicly displayed at the Republic Day parade on 26 January 2017.[6] Later that year, ATAGS set a new world record for towed-gun range, striking targets at 47.2 km and subsequently 48.074 km using high-explosive base-bleed rounds, a range that at the time exceeded that of any towed gun in its class worldwide.[6]
ATAGS is built around an autofrettaged 52-calibre barrel with a double-baffle muzzle brake and a hydro-pneumatic recoil system, paired with a 25-litre chamber that allows it to fire both standard in-service Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) ammunition at maximum range and the newer Bi-Modular Charge System (BMCS) propellant at lower zones.[1] The gun is unusual among towed howitzers in using an all-electric drive for gun-laying and a six-round automated ammunition-handling magazine, allowing it to fire a full six-round burst in as little as 30 seconds—a rate of fire DRDO describes as unmatched by any other gun in its class.[1] An integrated fire-control system combines an inertial-navigation-based Automatic Gun Alignment and Positioning System (AGAPS), a Muzzle Velocity Radar, and an onboard ballistic computer, enabling rapid, precise laying without external survey support.[1] Combat weight is approximately 18 tonnes, and maximum range with in-service ammunition reaches roughly 48 km.[2]
Alongside the baseline 18-tonne gun now entering series production, DRDO is developing a lighter Advanced Light Towed Gun System (ALTGS) variant with a smaller 23-litre chamber and a lighter barrel, intended to bring combat weight under the Army’s 15-tonne threshold for mountain and high-altitude artillery—a configuration the baseline ATAGS cannot meet.[4] Internal trials of the lightweight variant were expected to begin in 2026, with the Army eyeing an eventual requirement for roughly 1,200 such guns, starting with an initial order for around 400 units, to fill a long-standing gap in mobile mountain artillery.[3]
The definitive production ATAGS / Amogh is the baseline 18-tonne, 52-calibre gun now being delivered to the Army.[2] The lighter ALTGS (Advanced Light Towed Gun System), sometimes referred to as the Towed Gun System (TGS), is a parallel development intended for mountainous terrain, trading some range and chamber volume for a sub-15-tonne combat weight.[4]
In March 2023 the Ministry of Defence approved procurement of 307 ATAGS units for the Indian Army, and in March 2025 the Defence Ministry signed contracts worth nearly ₹6,900 crore with Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited to supply the 307 guns together with 327 high-mobility 6×6 gun-towing vehicles.[6] Bharat Forge alone is contracted to supply 184 of the units under the programme.[5] As of mid-2025 the first production gun was undergoing product-model testing, with the Army’s first ATAGS regiment scheduled to be raised by February 2027.[6]
ATAGS’s path to induction was unusually long relative to its 2017 world-record trials, with critics in the Indian defence press arguing the Army subjected the indigenous gun to repeated, unusually stringent test regimes over several years even as it kept the door open to importing Israel’s ATHOS towed howitzer as a competing option—a pattern some commentators characterised as institutional bias toward imported systems over domestically developed ones.[7] Supporters counter that the eventual 307-gun order, the largest indigenous towed-artillery contract in Indian history, vindicates the programme and demonstrates that a private-sector-DRDO partnership can deliver a genuinely world-class gun rather than a compromise import-substitute.[8]
ATAGS has not yet seen combat. Following its 2017 range-record trials and 2023 procurement approval, production guns began undergoing qualification and product-model testing through 2025, with the type making a further public appearance at the 2026 Republic Day parade ahead of its first regiment’s planned raising in February 2027.[5]
