Astra is India’s indigenously developed beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) family, designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited. Since its 2019 induction into the Indian Air Force, Astra has become a cornerstone of indigenous Indian air combat capability, reaching a major milestone with its first confirmed combat use during the May 2025 conflict with Pakistan.[1]
The Astra programme was officially cleared in April 2004 with an approved budget of roughly $138.4 million, with the Su-30MKI selected from the outset as the primary integration platform. Early ground-launcher tests were conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Balasore, in 2003 to establish baseline performance parameters, and the missile’s configuration was frozen by 2011 following extensive design iteration.[2] Between 2014 and 2019, Astra underwent more than 35 air launches and over 150 captive-carriage flight trials, with the first missile launched from a Su-30MKI in May 2014. Following a string of successful trials — including a September 2019 test that hit a target 90 km away — Astra Mk1 was formally inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2019.[2]
Astra Mk1 has a stated maximum range of around 110 km on a head-on engagement profile, is guided by a domestically developed active Ku-band radar seeker for terminal homing, and is mechanically and electrically compatible with standard Russian-origin launcher rails such as the AKU-58 and APU-170 — allowing it to be integrated onto Russian-origin aircraft with comparatively little modification.[2] In July 2020, India’s Ministry of Defence sanctioned the procurement of 248 Astra missiles, including 48 for the Indian Navy, reflecting the missile’s expanding role across both air force and naval aviation.[3]
Astra Mk1 achieved its first confirmed combat use during the May 2025 conflict between India and Pakistan, with Indian Su-30MKI fighters employing the indigenous missile in beyond-visual-range engagements — a landmark validation of the weapon under real operational conditions after years of trials and training use.[4] During the same period, the IAF also forward-deployed Tejas Mk1A squadrons armed with the newer Astra Mk2 to key airbases including Nal in Rajasthan and Naliya in Gujarat as part of efforts to establish air dominance during the crisis.[5]
Astra has been integrated across a widening range of Indian Air Force and Navy platforms, most prominently the Su-30MKI, and has since been extended to the HAL Tejas (both Mk1 and Mk1A) and is planned for the Navy’s Rafale-M aboard India’s aircraft carriers, giving India a common indigenous BVR weapon across its most important fighter types rather than depending solely on imported missiles.[6]
Astra Mk2, featuring a dual-pulse solid rocket motor that sustains energy through the missile’s terminal engagement phase, extends range to approximately 200–240 km depending on engagement geometry and has completed its primary developmental trials covering aerodynamics, propulsion, and guidance, putting India on course to join a select group of nations fielding an operational BVR missile in the 200 km-plus class. Series production has already begun at Bharat Dynamics Limited on a limited basis, with full-scale production targeted for 2027 and operational induction expected by the end of 2026.[7] Integration trials of Astra Mk2 on the Tejas Mk1/Mk1A were planned by the end of 2025-2026, alongside continuing integration work on the Su-30MKI.[8]
In parallel with Mk2, DRDO is developing the more ambitious Astra Mk3, codenamed “Gandiva,” which uses Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion to reach a projected range of around 350 km, placing it among the longest-ranged air-to-air missiles under development anywhere. Astra Mk3 induction is targeted for the 2028–2029 timeframe.[7]
India has begun actively marketing Astra Mk1 internationally as a modern alternative to the Russian R-77 for operators of Russian-origin fighters, citing the missile’s plug-and-play compatibility with existing Su-27/MiG-29/Su-30 family launcher rails and weapon-selector systems. Indonesia has been reported as moving to arm its Sukhoi fleet with over 150 India-made Astra Mk1 missiles, marking a significant export success and a notable shift in Indo-Pacific airpower dynamics.[9]
Astra’s progression from a 2004-era indigenous development programme to a combat-proven, exportable weapons family represents one of DRDO’s most significant air-to-air missile achievements, reducing India’s historical dependence on Russian R-77 and Western AMRAAM-class missiles while giving the IAF and Navy a common, continuously upgradeable BVR weapon across current and future fighter types.[1]
