Agni-P (Agni-Prime) is a new-generation, two-stage, canisterised solid-fuel medium-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO as a lighter, more mobile successor to the earlier Agni-I and Agni-II missiles, covering the 1,000-2,000 km range band. Already inducted in its road-mobile configuration, Agni-P has since been demonstrated from a rail-based mobile launcher, reflecting a broader Indian push toward more survivable, harder-to-track basing modes for its strategic missile force.[1]
Agni-P was designed to be significantly lighter and more compact than the missiles it succeeds, incorporating advanced composite materials and a dual redundant navigation and guidance system to improve accuracy while reducing the overall size and weight of the canisterised launch system, making it easier to transport, conceal, and rapidly deploy compared to older, bulkier Agni-series missiles.[2]
As a fully canisterised system, Agni-P requires no on-site fuelling, can be stored ready-to-fire in sealed launch canisters for extended periods, and can be moved and launched rapidly by road-mobile transporter-erector-launchers, substantially reducing launch-preparation time compared to older, non-canisterised missiles and improving the survivability of the launch unit against pre-emptive strikes.[2]
With a range band of roughly 1,000-2,000 km, Agni-P fills the medium-range gap between India’s shorter-range Prithvi and Agni-I/II missiles and its longer-range Agni-III/IV/V systems, giving Strategic Forces Command a more flexible, precisely tiered set of strike options tailored to different target distances rather than relying on a smaller number of longer-range missiles for all contingencies.[1]
Following a series of successful flight trials, the road-mobile configuration of Agni-P has already been inducted into Indian armed forces service, becoming an operational component of the country’s land-based missile deterrent alongside the older Agni-I through Agni-V systems.[3]
On 24 September 2025, India tested Agni-P from a rail-based mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha, successfully demonstrating the missile’s integration with a launcher system designed to operate from India’s national railway network. Rail-based mobility allows missile units to move rapidly across the country, remain concealed within ordinary civilian rail infrastructure, and potentially launch from unexpected locations including tunnels, significantly complicating an adversary’s ability to track and target Indian missile assets before launch.[4]
The pursuit of rail-mobile basing reflects lessons drawn from other nuclear powers’ historical basing strategies, where mobile launch platforms — whether road, rail, or submarine-based — are valued precisely because their location is far harder for an adversary to determine and target than a fixed silo, thereby enhancing the survivability and credibility of the deterrent under India’s “No First Use” doctrine, which depends on assured second-strike capability.[5]
Agni-P represents a deliberate modernisation of India’s medium-range missile force, replacing older, less mobile, and less accurate legacy systems with a lighter, more survivable, and more precise design, while the parallel development of rail-mobile basing adds an entirely new dimension of basing flexibility to India’s strategic missile posture.[1]
