Solar Group successfully tested the guided micro-missile, “Bhargavastra,” a state-of-the-art counter-drone system. Designed and developed by Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), the system aims to tackle the rising threats posed by loitering munitions and weaponized drones. EEL anticipated these challenges and proactively developed this solution, even before formal armed forces approval.

Modern Warfare Necessities

Across the globe we have seen a increasing trend of usage of swarm drones and large number of autonomous drones. In conflicts like Azerbaijan-Armenia and Ukraine-Russia highlighted the heavy use of drones. Over 100,000 drones are deployed annually, often countered using expensive surface-to-air missiles. Bhargavastra offers an economical and effective alternative for neutralizing enemy UAVs.

Key Features of Bhargavastra

  • Integrated Multi-Layer Defense: Bhargavastra employs a hard-kill micro-missile combined with soft-kill technology, creating a comprehensive UAV defense solution.
  • Advanced Compatibility: The system seamlessly integrates with existing armed forces’ networks, enhancing its utility in network-centric warfare.
  • Mobile Launching Platforms: Each platform can carry 16 missiles, providing tremendous
  • operational flexibility.

Successful Flight Tests

First Flight Test

On January 12, 2025, the guided micro-missile underwent its first control flight test at Gopalpur Seaward Firing Ranges (GSFR). It targeted an electronic target located 2,500 meters away and 400 meters above ground. The missile achieved a direct hit, guided by a full-authority Fire Control System.

Second Flight Test

The second test took place the following day, targeting a moving electronic UAV mimic. Again, the missile demonstrated precision by achieving a perfect hit, underscoring its reliability.

Operational Capabilities

Bhargavastra is engineered for diverse Indian terrains, including deserts and mountains, up to 5,000 meters in altitude. The system is equipped with:

  • C4I Command-and-Control Centre: This includes radar detecting medium and large UAVs at 10 km and small drones at 6 km.
  • EO/IR System: It ensures detection of low-RCS targets, enabling situational awareness and strategic response.
  • Swarm Neutralization: The system effectively counters autonomous drone swarms that cannot be jammed or spoofed.

Global Significance

Few advanced countries are developing similar micro-missile counter-drone systems. However, EEL’s Bhargavastra, with its unique swarm neutralization capability, sets a global benchmark.

Supporting Atma Nirbhar Bharat

The successful test of Bhargavastra reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in defense technology. EEL, a private Indian company, exemplifies commitment to the Atma Nirbhar Bharat policy initiated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.

Overall

Bhargavastra represents a groundbreaking achievement in indigenous defense innovation. Its operational flexibility and advanced capabilities position it as a globally competitive solution to modern warfare challenges.
