India’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) sonar systems are a family of indigenous underwater-detection sensors developed principally by DRDO’s Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi, and productionised by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), equipping Indian Navy surface ships and submarines with hull-mounted, towed-array and submarine sonar suites for detecting, tracking and prosecuting hostile submarines. This entry covers the sonar/sensor suite itself, distinct from the ships (Kamorta-class, Arnala-class, Mahe-class) and torpedoes (TAL, EHWT) that carry and employ it.[1]
HUMSA (Hull-Mounted Sonar Array) is an indigenous, medium-range, low-frequency active/passive dual-band sonar developed by NPOL, optimised for both shallow- and deep-water operations using advanced signal processing and multiple transmission modes for short- and long-range submarine surveillance. Its successor, HUMSA-NG (Mk2), is a fourth-generation ship-borne, hull-mounted sonar combining simultaneous active and passive operation, dual high-resolution multi-function display consoles, active/passive tracking of up to eight targets, and narrowband/broadband/DEMON signal analysis in operator-selectable frequency bands. Using lower-frequency transducers and modern POWER PC/SHARC-based signal-processing electronics, trials reportedly showed HUMSA-NG’s long-range performance exceeding comparable foreign sonars available for import. It has been fitted across a range of Indian Navy surface combatants, from stealth frigates to guided-missile destroyers.[1][2]
Panchendriya is India’s first indigenously developed integrated sonar and fire-control suite for submarines, developed by NPOL for the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet. It integrates multiple sonar arrays and processing systems into a unified underwater sensor and combat-management suite, giving Indian submarines an indigenous alternative to imported submarine sonar/fire-control systems.[3]
India separately pursued an indigenous low-frequency Advanced Towed Array Sonar (ATAS), initially under the “Nagan” programme, designed to equip surface vessels with the ability to detect quiet diesel-electric submarines in shallow coastal waters — a capability hull-mounted sonar struggles with due to shallow-water acoustic clutter and the surface ship’s own machinery noise. Import of foreign ATAS systems was blocked from the mid-1990s specifically to give the indigenous Nagan programme room to mature, but the Nagan project was ultimately shut down in 2012 after failing to meet requirements, with development redirected toward a successor programme (referred to as ALTAS) and, in parallel, renewed foreign ATAS procurement contracts to fill the operational gap while indigenous development continued.[4][5]
The broader Indian indigenous sonar family also includes APSOH (Advanced Panoramic SOnar Hull-mounted), an earlier hull-mounted sonar generation, and HUMVAD (Hull-Mounted Variable Depth sonar), which extends detection depth beyond a fixed hull-mounted array by varying the sensor’s effective depth — together representing successive generations of NPOL/DRDO’s decades-long indigenous sonar development effort.[3]
The Indian Navy has inducted four types of indigenously developed sonars from DRDO, delivered to give the fleet an indigenous underwater-sensing “ear” across its operational waters, reducing historical reliance on imported sonar suites for both surface ships and submarines.[6]
