Rustom-I is a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) as the foundational technology demonstrator for India’s broader Rustom UAV family, which later evolved into the larger Rustom-II/TAPAS-BH-201 programme.[1]

Development History

Rustom-I’s first flight attempt took place on 16 November 2009 at the Taneja Aerospace airfield near Hosur, but ended in a crash after a misjudgement of altitude led ground controllers to cut engine power prematurely. A successful maiden flight followed nearly a year later, on 15 October 2010, in which the aircraft flew for 30 minutes at an altitude of about 910 m (3,000 ft), validating the airframe and flight-control design.[1]

Design and Role

Conceived for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force as a shared ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) platform, Rustom-I served primarily as a technology and systems-maturation testbed, proving out flight-control laws, ground-control-station integration, and payload architecture that were subsequently scaled up into the larger, more capable Rustom-II/TAPAS-BH-201 design.[1]
