Tarang is an indigenous airborne radar warning receiver (RWR) developed by DRDO’s Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), operational across multiple Indian Air Force and Indian Navy aircraft platforms as part of their self-protection electronic warfare suite.[1]
Tarang intercepts and identifies emissions from airborne and ground-based acquisition radars, target-tracking radars and missile-guidance radars across multiple frequency octaves, providing pilots with real-time threat-warning information. On detecting a threat radar, Tarang cues the aircraft’s onboard self-protection jammer to apply the most appropriate countermeasure technique against that specific threat, and also functions as the master controller for the aircraft’s Counter Measures Dispensing System (CMDS), coordinating chaff and flare release.[1]
Tarang is considered on par with leading contemporary RWR systems internationally and has been integrated across a range of IAF and Indian Navy aircraft as a core self-protection sensor, forming a building block for more advanced integrated EW suites such as the newer Swayam Raksha Kavach developed for Tejas Mk1A.[1]
