Astra is an indigenous all-weather beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) family developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. Designed to engage highly manoeuvrable supersonic aircraft at long range, Astra has become the cornerstone of India’s push toward self-reliance in air-to-air weaponry, reducing dependence on imported missiles such as the Russian R-77 and French MICA.[1]
The Astra programme was launched by DRDO to give Indian fighter aircraft an indigenous BVR capability comparable to contemporary Western and Russian missiles. Development spanned more than a decade of testing, guidance-system refinement, and integration trials across multiple fighter platforms before the missile reached operational maturity. The programme has since evolved into a family of variants with increasing range and propulsion sophistication, mirroring international BVRAAM development trends toward longer no-escape zones.
The Astra Mk-1 is the baseline operational variant, with a range of over 100 km, and has been integrated onto the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet, where it is in active induction. DRDO and the Ministry of Defence have completed transfer of technology to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for series production for both the Air Force and Navy. On 12 March 2025, an Astra Mk-1 was successfully test-fired from a Tejas Mk1 prototype at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, scoring a direct hit on a target drone at a range of over 100 km, validating integration with India’s indigenous light fighter.[2]
The Astra Mk-2 is a longer-range derivative under development, with a stated range of 140-160 km. As of late 2024, developmental and user trials were planned through 2025 and into 2026, with induction targeted for 2026 and full-scale production expected by 2027. The Mk-2 is intended to close the range gap with contemporary international BVRAAMs and extend the no-escape zone against enemy fighters.[3]
The most advanced variant under development, sometimes referred to as Gandiva, is the Astra Mk-3, which uses Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion to achieve significantly extended range and sustained terminal-phase energy compared to conventional rocket-motor missiles. The SFDR-powered configuration was flight tested in 2023, according to the Ministry of Defence’s year-end review, representing a major step toward a true very-long-range Indian BVRAAM.
To meet both domestic induction targets and prospective export demand, India is establishing dual production lines for Astra missiles spanning both the public sector (Bharat Dynamics Limited) and private industry, an arrangement intended to scale up manufacturing capacity significantly beyond what a single production line could support.
Astra has emerged as a flagship product in India’s growing defence export drive. Indonesia has moved to acquire more than 150 Astra Mk-1 missiles to arm its Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 fighter fleet, with a memorandum of understanding signed between Bharat Dynamics Limited and Indonesian defence holding company Republikorp setting the stage for delivery, integration, and localised maintenance support, even as a formal procurement contract remains under negotiation.[4] India has also conducted high-level briefings for the air forces of Vietnam and Indonesia on Astra Mk-1 capabilities, signalling further export interest across Southeast Asia.
Beyond the Su-30MKI and Tejas Mk1/Mk1A, Astra is intended for integration across India’s current and future fighter fleet, including the Tejas Mk2 and the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, positioning the missile family as the standard BVR weapon for Indian-origin fighters for decades to come.
Astra’s induction reduces India’s reliance on imported BVR missiles for a capability that is central to modern air combat, while its export success with Indonesia and interest from Vietnam demonstrates the programme’s credibility beyond domestic service. Together with the indigenous Akash, Astra represents one of DRDO’s clearest missile-development success stories of the past decade.
