SEPECAT Jaguar (IAF)

The SEPECAT Jaguar is a twin-engine, Anglo-French supersonic strike aircraft that has served as the Indian Air Force’s primary deep-penetration strike platform since the early 1980s. Originally developed jointly by Breguet and BAC (later British Aerospace) for the British Royal Air Force and the French Air Force, the type has been retired by both its original operators, leaving the IAF as the world’s sole remaining Jaguar operator as of 2026.[1]

Induction and Licence Production

India selected the Jaguar in 1979 to meet a requirement for a dedicated low-level strike aircraft capable of penetrating heavily defended airspace to deliver precision and nuclear ordnance. The first aircraft were delivered directly from the UK, with subsequent batches assembled and later licence-built domestically by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). India went on to become the largest operator of the type in the world, ultimately inducting more than 160 aircraft across strike, maritime strike, reconnaissance, and trainer variants.[1]

Role and Squadrons

IAF Jaguars form the backbone of the service’s deep-penetration strike and maritime strike squadrons, tasked with low-level ingress to deliver conventional bombs, anti-ship missiles, and precision-guided munitions against high-value targets. A dedicated maritime-strike variant equipped with Israeli Elta EL/M-2032 radar and Harpoon-capable weapons stations serves the coastal-defence role, while the type has also historically carried India’s air-delivered nuclear gravity bombs, giving it a strategic as well as tactical dimension.

DARIN Upgrade Programmes

The IAF has progressively modernised its Jaguar fleet through the DARIN (Display Attack Ranging Inertial Navigation) avionics upgrade series. The DARIN III programme, begun in 2008, is the most significant, replacing the aircraft’s mechanically-scanned radar with the Israeli Elta EL/M-2052 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. Under a technology-transfer arrangement with Israel Aerospace Industries, HAL manufactured 54 EL/M-2052 radars domestically, with the first delivered in 2021; by 2024 around 60 aircraft had been brought up to DARIN III standard, also gaining compatibility with the indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.[2]

Phase-Out Plan

In 2024 the IAF announced a phased retirement plan under which the oldest batch of roughly 60 Jaguars would be withdrawn between 2028 and 2031 and replaced by newer 4.5-generation aircraft, principally the indigenous Tejas Mk1A, while the remaining airframes continue to receive DARIN III upgrades including EL/M-2052 radar and ASRAAM short-range air-to-air missiles.[3] The transition is deliberately timed to coincide with large-scale Tejas Mk1A induction, expected to gather pace from 2029 onward, marking the beginning of the end for a strike aircraft that will by then have served India for more than four decades.

Sustaining the Fleet

Because the Jaguar is out of production and out of service everywhere except India, sustaining spares and airframe availability has become an increasing challenge. In December 2025, India acquired roughly 20 retired Jaguar airframes from Oman to be stripped for spare parts to support the existing IAF fleet, following an earlier acquisition of nine decommissioned Jaguars from the United Kingdom for the same purpose.[4] In April 2026, the Ministry of Defence invited bids to integrate the ASRAAM missile in place of the ageing Matra R550 Magic on 74 Jaguar aircraft, extending the type’s relevance into the next decade.

Recent Public Appearances

During the Republic Day parade on 26 January 2026, the IAF showcased Jaguars carrying Astra missiles on overwing rails, publicly demonstrating the aircraft’s continuing beyond-visual-range air-to-air capability more than four decades after its induction.[4]

Strategic Significance

Despite its age, the Jaguar remains a valued asset for the IAF because of its long range, heavy payload, and low-level penetration characteristics that are difficult to fully replicate with lighter multi-role fighters. Its eventual replacement by Tejas Mk1A and, later, more advanced platforms represents a deliberate generational shift in the IAF’s strike-aircraft inventory, moving from an imported-and-licence-built Cold War-era design toward a fully indigenous fighter line.
