The HAL Dhruv, formally the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), is a twin-engine, multi-role utility helicopter designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is the backbone of India’s indigenous helicopter fleet, operated in various forms by the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and several state police and paramilitary forces.[1] Over 400 Dhruvs have been built for domestic and export customers, together logging more than 340,000 flying hours.[2]
Design work on the ALH began in November 1984, with the programme intended to give India a modern, indigenously produced helicopter capable of replacing the ageing Chetak and Cheetah fleets. The prototype first flew in August 1992, but the programme was significantly delayed by repeated design changes requested by the Indian Army, budgetary constraints, and technology-transfer restrictions imposed after the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which cut India off from some Western avionics and engine suppliers.[1] The helicopter finally entered operational service in 2002, a full decade after its first flight.
The Dhruv is powered by twin HAL/Turbomeca Shakti turboshaft engines, each producing approximately 1,400 shaft horsepower, giving the helicopter a cruise speed of around 140 knots (260 km/h) and a maximum take-off weight of roughly 5,500 kg.[2] The Shakti engine was co-developed with French manufacturer Turbomeca (now Safran Helicopter Engines) specifically to give the ALH strong high-altitude performance, a requirement driven by the Indian Army’s need to operate helicopters at Himalayan and Siachen Glacier altitudes.
The Dhruv family has evolved through four principal marks. The Mk-I and Mk-II were the initial production standards. The Mk-III introduced the more powerful Shakti-1H engine for improved hot-and-high performance above 6,000 metres and can carry up to 14 fully equipped troops. The Mk-IV, known as the Rudra (ALH-WSI, or Weapon System Integrated), is a dedicated armed variant fitted with a 20mm turreted cannon, 70mm rocket pods, anti-tank guided missiles, and air-to-air missiles.[3] A dedicated navalised variant, the Mk-III Marine Reconnaissance (MR), equips the Indian Navy and Coast Guard with maritime surveillance radar, an electro-optical sensor turret, and folding rotor blades for shipboard storage.
The Rudra is the Indian Army’s dedicated attack-configured ALH, distinct from the unarmed utility Mk-III. The Indian Army currently fields 96 utility ALHs alongside roughly 75 armed Rudra helicopters, which provide close air support, anti-armour, and escort capability for army aviation units.[3] The Rudra shares its airframe and engines with the Dhruv but adds a chin-mounted cannon, stub wings for weapons carriage, and an integrated fire-control and targeting suite.
In March 2023, a Mk-III naval variant made an emergency water landing off the coast of Mumbai after a sudden loss of power and rapid loss of height; all three crew members were rescued.[4] A second crash later that year, near Porbandar, was traced to control-rod and hydraulic defects, and the Indian government grounded the entire fleet of roughly 330 Dhruv helicopters across the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard pending investigation. A subsequent fatal crash in Gujarat in January 2024 was attributed to a swashplate fracture, with an investigating panel citing a lack of redundancy in the swashplate assembly design.[5]
Following the safety review, HAL replaced aluminium control rods with steel control rods on affected helicopters and introduced special inspections of the rod every 100 flying hours, down from the previous 300-hour interval. The Army and Air Force fleets were cleared for full operations roughly four months after grounding, while routine flights for some units remained restricted for longer even as helicopters were cleared for emergency operational use amid heightened operational tempo.[5]
Beyond India, the Dhruv has been exported to and operated by air arms in Nepal, Ecuador, Mauritius, Israel, Turkey, Maldives, and Myanmar, among others, and has also flown with the Sarang aerobatic display team of the Indian Air Force.
The Dhruv production line remains active. On 29 January 2026, Pawan Hans placed an order worth over ₹1,800 crore for 10 Dhruv NG (Next Generation) helicopters with associated spares, for delivery by 2027. On 3 March 2026, India’s Ministry of Defence placed a further order for 6 Dhruv Mk-III (MR) variants for the Indian Coast Guard at a cost of ₹2,901 crore, underscoring the type’s continued central role in India’s rotary-wing fleet even after the 2023-24 safety controversy.[6]
Despite its troubled safety record, the Dhruv/Rudra family remains the single largest indigenously produced helicopter type in Indian military service and a cornerstone of HAL’s rotary-wing manufacturing base, providing the design and production experience that underpins later programmes including the Light Combat Helicopter (Prachand) and the Light Utility Helicopter.
