The HAL Prachand (“fierce”) is India’s first indigenously designed and manufactured dedicated attack helicopter, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited under the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) programme specifically to operate in the extreme high-altitude conditions of the Himalayas.[1] Formally inducted in October 2022, the Prachand now equips both the Indian Air Force and Indian Army and is backed by a large follow-on order that will make it one of the largest indigenous rotorcraft fleets in Indian service.[6]

Development History

The requirement for the Prachand traces directly to the 1999 Kargil War, which exposed the Indian armed forces’ lack of an armed helicopter capable of operating effectively, and carrying a useful weapons load, at extreme high altitude.[2] HAL launched the Light Combat Helicopter programme in 2006 to address this gap, drawing on the dynamic components of the HAL Dhruv utility helicopter while developing a dedicated, narrow-fuselage attack airframe optimised for gunship survivability.[2] The first LCH prototype (TD-1) made its maiden flight on 29 March 2010, and after an extended trials and weapons-integration campaign, HAL declared the type ready for operational induction in January 2019.[1] The helicopter was formally inducted into the Indian Air Force on 3 October 2022, receiving the name “Prachand.”[6]

Design and Features

The Prachand is a twin-engine attack helicopter powered by two HAL/Turbomeca (Safran) Shakti turboshaft engines, each producing roughly 871 kW, giving a cruise speed of about 260 km/h, a maximum speed of 268 km/h, and a never-exceed speed of 330 km/h.[5] It has a main rotor diameter of 13.3 metres, a climb rate of roughly 12 m/s, a service ceiling of about 6,500 metres, and a range of approximately 550 km, specifications specifically tuned to allow armed operations from Himalayan forward bases where thin air severely degrades conventional helicopter performance.[5] Armament includes a chin-mounted, twin-barrel M621 20 mm cannon, an FZ231 rocket launcher for 70 mm rockets, and provision for MBDA air-to-air, air-to-surface, and anti-radiation missiles as well as the indigenous Helina (helicopter-launched Nag) anti-tank guided missile, alongside a modern electronic-warfare self-protection suite.[5]

Modernisation and Future Development

Following the initial induction batch, India moved to substantially scale up Prachand production. On 28 March 2025 the Ministry of Defence signed two contracts with HAL for the supply of 156 additional LCH Prachand helicopters, together with training and associated support equipment, in a package worth ₹62,700 crore, split between the Indian Air Force and Indian Army.[6] As of the most recent reporting, the Air Force operated 10 Prachands in service with 66 more on order, while the Army operated 5 with 90 more on order, reflecting the scale of the 2025 contracts working through delivery.[6]

Variants

The Prachand is fielded in largely common configuration across both services, with the IAF variant emphasising air-to-air and offensive-support roles and the Army variant emphasising close air support and anti-armour operations, both sharing the same high-altitude-optimised airframe, engines, and core weapons fit.[6]

Procurement and Cost

The March 2025 contracts for 156 additional helicopters, worth ₹62,700 crore, represent by far the largest Prachand commitment to date, dwarfing the initial induction batches delivered to the IAF and Army in 2022-2024.[6] Combined with the smaller pre-existing fleet, India’s total planned Prachand inventory across both services now exceeds 160 helicopters once the 2025 orders are fully delivered.[6]

Logistics and Criticism

Like several other major Indian indigenous defence programmes, the LCH’s path from a 2006 programme launch to 2022 formal induction spanned roughly sixteen years, a timeline critics have again attributed to the cumulative effect of extended trials, weapons-integration testing, and certification processes typical of Indian indigenous rotorcraft and aircraft development. Supporters note that the resulting design, purpose-built around Himalayan high-altitude performance rather than adapted from a lowland design, addresses a genuine and previously unmet operational requirement exposed by the Kargil War, and that the scale of the 2025 follow-on order reflects strong service confidence in the type.[2]

Operational History

Since its October 2022 induction, the Prachand has been progressively fielded by both the Indian Air Force and Indian Army, with units based to support operations along both the western border with Pakistan and, particularly, the high-altitude Himalayan sectors facing China where the type’s design requirements originated.[3] The type has not yet been used in combat, but has been extensively demonstrated in high-altitude exercises validating its ability to operate armed and loaded from forward bases at altitudes that would ground many conventional attack helicopters.[3]
