The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twin-engine, two-seat multirole air-superiority fighter developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and built under licence in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), forming the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet.[1] Distinguished by canard foreplanes and three-dimensional thrust-vectoring engines that give it exceptional agility, the Su-30MKI combines air-superiority performance with long-range strike capability, including carriage of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, and has flown confirmed combat missions in both the 2019 Balakot crisis and the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict (Operation Sindoor).[6]

Development History

India signed its first contract with Russia’s Rosvooruzhenie (now Rosoboronexport) on 30 November 1996 for eight interim Su-30K fighters and 32 definitive Su-30MKIs.[1] A follow-on memorandum of understanding in October 2000 established licence production of 140 Su-30MKIs in India, and the Indian Air Force’s total order eventually grew to 272 aircraft, with an initial batch delivered directly from Russia between 2002 and 2007 while HAL ramped up its own assembly line at Nashik.[1] HAL subsequently met its “full production target” of 140 licence-built Su-30MKIs at Nashik, completing the bulk of India’s order domestically.[2] As of mid-2025, reporting indicated HAL would need roughly 24 months to restart Su-30MKI production to fulfil a further order for 12 additional aircraft to replace attrition losses.[4]

Design and Features

The Su-30MKI is powered by two AL-31FP afterburning turbofans, each rated at roughly 12,500 kgf of afterburning thrust, fitted with two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles canted 32 degrees outward and deflectable up to ±15 degrees, allowing the engines to generate pitch, yaw, and roll moments independently of the flight-control surfaces.[5] Combined with forward canard foreplanes that boost lift and allow controlled high-angle-of-attack manoeuvres such as the “Cobra”, this thrust-vectoring/canard combination gives the Su-30MKI a level of close-in agility unmatched by most contemporary fighters, at the cost of some aerodynamic complexity and maintenance burden.[5] The aircraft can reach Mach 2 at altitude, has a combat radius exceeding 1,500 km, and can carry up to roughly 8,000 kg of ordnance across twelve hardpoints, spanning air-to-air missiles, precision-guided munitions, and the air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which flies at up to 3,500 km/h with a roughly 300 kg warhead and 500 km range, giving the platform a genuine long-range strike role alongside air superiority.[8]

Modernisation and Future Development

India’s Defence Acquisition Council approved a comprehensive “Super Sukhoi” modernisation programme in November 2023, targeting an initial batch of 84 aircraft with plans to eventually cover roughly 75 percent of the fleet, or about 200 jets.[3] The upgrade includes a redesigned cockpit, new avionics, and a new indigenous Virupaksha active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar reported capable of detecting stealth aircraft at ranges around 130 miles, alongside a new electronic-warfare suite with jammer pods, and targets roughly 78 percent indigenous content in the upgraded configuration.[9] The Cabinet Committee on Security cleared the procurement at a cost of roughly ₹13,500 crore ($1.4 billion) on 12 December 2024, with the contract signed the same day, though as of February 2026 final CCS approval for the broader follow-on phase remained pending.[3] Separately, in September 2024 the Cabinet Committee on Security approved procurement of 240 AL-31FP engines for roughly ₹26,000 crore ($2.7 billion) to sustain the existing fleet.[3]

Variants

India’s fleet is built around the definitive Su-30MKI standard (canards, thrust vectoring, Indian/French/Israeli avionics mix), distinct from the baseline Russian Su-30 and other export variants such as the Su-30MKM (Malaysia) or Su-30MKA (Algeria).[1] The emerging Super Sukhoi upgrade configuration, covering up to 84-200 aircraft, represents the next major standard, adding the Virupaksha AESA radar, new avionics, and expanded electronic-warfare capability while retaining the existing airframe and thrust-vectoring propulsion.[9]

Procurement and Cost

Beyond the original 272-aircraft order (mixing direct Russian deliveries and HAL licence production), the current Super Sukhoi upgrade programme represents a roughly ₹13,500 crore ($1.4 billion) initial commitment for the first tranche, with a further, larger follow-on phase still awaiting final clearance as of early 2026.[3] A parallel ₹26,000 crore ($2.7 billion) contract for 240 replacement AL-31FP engines addresses fleet sustainment independent of the airframe upgrade.[3] HAL has also been tasked with restarting limited new-build production to replace a small number of aircraft lost to attrition over the fleet’s operational life.[4]

Logistics and Criticism

The Su-30MKI’s complex thrust-vectoring, fly-by-wire, and multi-source (Russian/French/Israeli/Indian) avionics integration has periodically drawn criticism over maintenance burden and fleet-wide serviceability rates, an issue common to highly integrated multi-source fighter designs. The fleet has also suffered a number of crashes over its operational life, prompting periodic safety reviews, though the type’s combat performance in both 2019 and 2025 has been cited by the IAF as validating its continued central role pending the induction of newer indigenous and imported fighters.[6] The long approval timeline for the full Super Sukhoi programme, still not finally cleared as of February 2026 despite initial DAC approval in late 2023, has also drawn scrutiny typical of large Indian defence-modernisation efforts.[3]

Operational History

Four Su-30MKIs flew escort/decoy missions during the 26 February 2019 Balakot airstrike, drawing Pakistani fighters south of the main Mirage 2000 strike package; in the subsequent aerial engagement on 27 February 2019, an IAF Su-30MKI reportedly evaded and jammed several AMRAAM missiles fired by Pakistani F-16s during beyond-visual-range combat.[6] During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Su-30MKIs armed with the indigenous Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile flew combat air patrol missions, marking the missile’s first confirmed operational combat use, while separate reporting confirmed operational use of Rampage air-to-surface missiles from Su-30MKI platforms during the same conflict.[7] The IAF was reported to operate nearly 40 BrahMos-equipped Su-30MKIs following the operation, underscoring the type’s expanding long-range strike role.[6]
