Akash (“sky”) is a medium-range, mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by DRDO under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, providing area air defence for both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force against aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems.[1] Fielded by the Air Force from 2012 and the Army from 2015, Akash has since become one of India’s most combat-proven indigenous weapon systems, credited with intercepting Pakistani drones and missiles during Operation Sindoor in May 2025 and shielding higher-value assets such as the S-400 air-defence system throughout that operation.[9]
Akash traces its origins to the 1980s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), the same DRDO effort that produced the Prithvi and Agni missile families.[1] Development and testing extended over roughly three decades before full induction; the Indian Air Force inducted its Akash Weapon System squadrons starting in 2012, followed by the Indian Army’s own regiments from 2015, each service operating variants tuned to its specific basing and mobility requirements.[1] Production has been led by Bharat Dynamics Limited (missile airframe and propulsion) and Bharat Electronics Limited (radar, command, and control systems), with Bharat Dynamics announcing completion of the First Off Production Model of the upgraded Advanced Akash Weapon System in March 2026.[6]
The baseline Akash missile engages aerial targets out to roughly 45 km at altitudes up to about 18 km, flying at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 3.5 (up to roughly 4,200 km/h) using command guidance in mid-course flight and active radar terminal homing, with a 60 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead capable of destroying fast, manoeuvring aerial targets.[1] A single Akash battery typically comprises multiple mobile launchers, a 3D phased-array Rajendra fire-control radar, and a command post, allowing the system to track and simultaneously engage several targets in both group and fully autonomous modes without depending on external cueing.[9] This networked, multi-target engagement capability was central to its performance during Operation Sindoor, when it helped defeat large-scale drone and missile salvoes launched across India’s western front.[9]
DRDO has developed a substantially lighter and longer-ranged successor, Akash-NG (Next Generation), which cuts missile weight from roughly 700 kg to about 350 kg while extending range; user trials with the Indian Air Force validated a 30 km range, and in January 2026 DRDO officials disclosed a new rocket motor that pushes Akash-NG’s range out to approximately 50 km.[2] Akash-NG completed its final user evaluation trials, demonstrating engagement of aerial targets across multiple scenarios, and was declared ready for induction into the Indian armed forces.[4] A further incremental upgrade, Akash Prime, adds an indigenous active radio-frequency seeker optimised for reliable performance in low-temperature, high-altitude conditions; the variant was successfully tested in Ladakh in July 2025 at an altitude above 15,000 feet, scoring two direct hits on high-speed targets in the sector’s rarefied atmosphere.[3] The Advanced Akash Weapon System, whose first production model was completed in March 2026, incorporates further upgraded sub-systems across the missile and ground segment.[6]
The family now spans the original Akash (Army/Air Force baseline, ~45 km), Akash Prime (indigenous RF seeker, optimised for high-altitude/cold-weather reliability), and Akash-NG (lighter airframe, ~30-50 km range, ready for induction as of 2026), alongside the newly completed Advanced Akash Weapon System production standard.[2][3][6]
Beyond its extensive domestic procurement across Army and Air Force squadrons, Akash has become one of India’s flagship defence exports: Armenia has procured Akash systems as part of its broader defence-modernisation relationship with India, reinforcing Akash’s international reputation following its combat performance.[9] India has also pursued a potential Akash-NG sale to Brazil, with negotiations reported as ongoing in August 2024, though by mid-2025 that deal was reported to be paused as the Brazilian Army weighed a competing offer from Europe’s MBDA for its medium-range air-defence requirement.[2]
As with many long-gestation DRDO programmes, Akash took roughly three decades from initial IGMDP development to full operational induction, drawing the familiar criticism levelled at Indian indigenous missile projects for slow timelines relative to import alternatives.[1] That criticism has been substantially blunted by Akash’s demonstrated combat performance in 2025: during Operation Sindoor, Akash batteries reportedly helped defeat a barrage of more than 600 drones launched across the western front in a single wave, with Indian Army crews executing rapid, non-stop cross-country relocations to keep batteries survivable and effective under threat of counter-fire.[8]
Akash’s most significant combat test came on the night of 7-8 May 2025, when Pakistan launched drones and missiles at military installations across northern and western India as part of the broader India-Pakistan clash later referred to as Operation Sindoor. Akash batteries, operating in both autonomous and networked modes, intercepted multiple incoming threats and were specifically credited with protecting India’s S-400 air-defence units from damage throughout the operation, with no S-400 unit lost or damaged.[9] The episode has been widely cited in Indian and international defence analysis as validating both the missile’s technical performance and the broader layered air-defence architecture built around Akash, IACCS networking, and other indigenous sensors.[7]
