The T-72 “Ajeya” (Sanskrit/Hindi for “invincible”) is a licence-built Soviet-origin main battle tank that has formed the numerical backbone of the Indian Army’s armoured corps since the early 1980s. Locally designated the T-72M1 Ajeya, it remains India’s most numerous tank type even as it is progressively supplemented and eventually replaced by the T-90S Bhishma and the indigenous Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) programme.[1] As of the mid-2020s the Indian Army fields an estimated 2,400-2,500 T-72 variants, making it one of the largest T-72 operators in the world.[3]
India inducted the T-72 as an interim main battle tank starting in 1979, with the bulk of the initial fleet imported directly from the Soviet Union between 1982 and 1986.[6] To reduce dependence on imports, India established a licence-production line for the T-72M1 at the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, in Tamil Nadu, under a technology-transfer agreement concluded around 1984.[6] HVF Avadi produced the type domestically, under the “Ajeya” name, through roughly 1998, delivering more than 1,100 tanks over a fifteen-year run at a peak rate of about 70 vehicles a year during the mid-1980s to early 1990s.[6] Combined with earlier imports, this licence run made the T-72 the single largest tank type in Indian service, a position it still holds despite the type’s advancing age.[3]
The Ajeya follows the classic low-profile Soviet tank layout: a three-man crew (commander, gunner, driver), an autoloaded 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore main gun, and a compact hull that keeps combat weight to around 41.5 tonnes, substantially lighter than contemporary Western MBTs.[6] Original production tanks were powered by a 780 hp multi-fuel diesel engine, with later production using the V-84MS 840 hp four-stroke, twelve-cylinder multi-fuel diesel, giving a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 18.8 hp/tonne.[6] Armour is a combination of cast steel and composite inserts in the glacis and turret front, a design that prioritised low cost, ease of mass production, and a small frontal silhouette over the heavier composite and reactive-armour packages fitted to later Western and Russian designs.[6] Decades of Indian service have exposed the type’s original shortcomings in crew ergonomics, night-fighting capability, and fire-control precision, all of which have been the target of successive Indian upgrade programmes.[9]
Facing a choice between retiring its T-72 fleet outright or extending its service life pending the FRCV’s entry into service, the Indian Army has opted for a large-scale modernisation of roughly half the fleet, about 1,200 of its 2,400-2,500 T-72s, intended to keep the type combat-relevant to around 2040.[1] The modernisation has several parallel strands. First, a fire-control upgrade: by late February 2026 the Army had fitted indigenous Thermal Imaging Fire Control Systems (TIFCS), paired with automatic target trackers, to an initial batch of 96 tanks, giving crews a genuine day/night detect-and-engage capability the original T-72 lacked.[7] Second, a mobility upgrade: in March 2025 India signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport for 1,000 new 1,000 hp engines to replace the fleet’s aged and underpowered original power packs, restoring acceleration, cross-country mobility, and towing capacity.[5] Third, a structural overhaul: the Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur (VFJ) is rebuilding tanks to “zero-hour” condition, effectively remanufacturing hulls and running gear, with the pilot batch of two overhauled tanks flagged off on 28 January 2026 and roughly 790 further tanks scheduled for restoration over five years.[1] Upgraded tanks have subsequently been demonstrated performing heavy recovery/towing tasks, including hauling a 100-tonne armoured convoy, as a public showcase of the mobility gains.[4]
The Indian fleet is dominated by the T-72M1 standard (locally “Ajeya”), the definitive licence-built version with improved armour over the baseline T-72M.[9] Within this broad type, Indian tanks reflect several production batches spanning imported, CKD-assembled, and fully indigenous Avadi-built hulls from the 1980s and 1990s. The ongoing modernisation effectively creates a new de facto standard, sometimes referred to informally as the upgraded or overhauled Ajeya, combining the original hull and gun with a new engine, new fire-control suite, and a remanufactured drivetrain, distinguishing it materially from unmodified, legacy-standard tanks that remain in reserve or second-line service.[7]
Beyond the original 1980s-90s import and licence-production programme, the current modernisation is being funded as a series of discrete contracts rather than a single acquisition: the $248 million Rosoboronexport engine deal (2025) for 1,000 power packs, and separate Indian Army/Ordnance-linked contracts covering the TIFCS fire-control kits and the VFJ zero-hour overhaul programme covering roughly 790 hulls over five years.[1][5] This piecemeal, life-extension approach is markedly cheaper than new-build tank procurement and is explicitly framed as a bridge until the indigenous FRCV programme matures and begins large-scale deliveries.[1]
The T-72 modernisation reflects a long-standing tension in Indian armoured planning: the Ajeya fleet is numerically indispensable but technologically dated, and the Army has repeatedly had to weigh the cost of upgrading a 1970s-vintage design against accelerating replacement. Critics have pointed to the type’s comparatively thin base armour, ageing automotive components, and continued reliance on Russian engines and gun ammunition at a time when Russia’s own defence-industrial capacity is strained by the war in Ukraine, a concern that also affects the newer T-90 fleet and has pushed India toward broader indigenisation of tank spares and sub-systems.[5] Analysts have also noted that fitting modern thermal sights and engines to a legacy hull only partially closes the capability gap with contemporary third-generation-plus tanks, reinforcing the Army’s parallel push for the FRCV as a genuine long-term replacement rather than a further T-72 upgrade cycle.[9]
The T-72 Ajeya has never been used in a shooting war by India, but it has been the Army’s primary strike-armour type for over four decades, equipping the bulk of its independent armoured brigades and armoured divisions along both the western border with Pakistan and, since the 2020 stand-off, the eastern Ladakh sector against China, where its lighter weight relative to the T-90 has been noted as an advantage for operations at altitude.[3] Upgraded tanks have been publicly demonstrated in mobility and towing trials during 2025-2026 as the Army showcases the modernisation programme’s progress.[4]
