India is actively building its complete spectrum of tank engine capabilities. The effort spans from 600 HP to 1500 HP engines. Currently, the focus lies on developing an 800 HP engine with an indigenous automatic transmission. CVRDE Advances Indigenous Powertrain for Armoured Vehicles (800 HP Engine)

The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) leads this initiative. The 800 HP engine will feature a fully automatic transmission. This powertrain will suit tracked vehicles weighing 25 to 30 tons. It will form a ‘T’ type configuration with the engine, supporting modern cooling and fan systems.

CVRDE has released a Request for Information (RFI) to onboard Indian vendors. Selected vendors will help fabricate, assemble, and test the prototype transmission. CVRDE will supply all core design and subsystem drawings for reference.

Key Features of the 800 HP Automatic Transmission

The transmission features robust design elements. It will support four forward and two reverse speeds. The gear shifting will be smooth due to a hydrodynamic torque converter and hydrostatic steering.

The system includes:

  • Torque converter for initial acceleration
  • Bevel train for directional changes
  • Three planetary gearboxes for speed change

Design and Vendor Responsibilities

CVRDE is handling the subsystem designs. Vendors must manufacture and test all components. They will also update design drawings based on supplier-specific needs. Some design tweaks will accommodate casing, couplings, and hydraulic layouts.

OEM components such as the torque converter, brakes, and hydrostatic units will be sourced based on CVRDE’s specs. Vendors must integrate these into the final system. The hydraulic system must support gear shifting, braking, and torque control. It must include piping, nozzles, accumulators, and control units.

Development and Testing Expectations

CVRDE will develop the transmission controller. Vendors will use this during functional testing. Load and no-load tests must be performed using purpose-built test rigs. Test stands must simulate real vehicle driving conditions.

The development process includes:

  • Assembly of transmission and subsystem integration
  • Testing with controller and feedback loop
  • Iterative updates if flaws appear during testing
  • Finalization of drawings post-prototype validation

If needed, design corrections must be made before bulk manufacturing. CVRDE will also inspect the test facilities and their readiness.

Pre-Qualification for Indian Vendors

Only Indian firms can apply. They must show experience with automatic transmissions above 300 HP. The vendor must also show past work with planetary gearboxes and multi-plate clutches. Design capabilities using 3D modeling tools are essential.

Facilities must exist within India to assemble and test these systems. The firm must handle precision components and hydraulic aggregates. Gear design and integration experience will be a core evaluation factor.

Clean rooms and inspection infrastructure are also required. Quality control, NDT tools, and gear testing equipment must be in-house.

Long-Term Supply Commitment

Vendors must commit to supplying over 100 transmissions annually. This should continue for at least 30 years. The vendor must also be ISO 9001 certified and have a project team of at least 10 design engineers. Financial capacity and management strength will weigh heavily in selection.
