Arudhra is a long-range, 4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) surveillance and air-defence radar developed by DRDO’s LRDE and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), designed to strengthen Indian airspace surveillance against fast, low-observable, and low-flying threats such as cruise missiles and stealthy aircraft.[1]

Design and Capability

As a 4D radar, Arudhra simultaneously measures range, azimuth, elevation and velocity/Doppler for every detected track, giving it a fuller kinematic picture of targets than older 3D air-surveillance radars. Built on a GaN/GaAs solid-state AESA array, it is intended to detect low radar-cross-section and low-altitude threats — including cruise missiles and low-flying strike aircraft — at long range, feeding India’s integrated air-defence and command-and-control network.[1][2]

Induction

Arudhra has been inducted into IAF service as a long-range surveillance sensor supplementing India’s air-defence radar network, working alongside legacy radars and Akash/S-400-linked fire-control systems as part of a layered detection and engagement chain.[2]
