Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has delivered 100 control centers for the Akashteer Air Defence Control & Reporting System. This marks an important step in strengthening India’s defense capabilities. The rollout of Akashteer began in March 2024, and BEL committed to delivering all 100 control centers by September 2024.

What is Akashteer?

Akashteer, developed by BEL, is an advanced Air Defence Control and Reporting System for the Indian Army. Its main purpose is to provide air defense units with a tactical command and control network. This system helps improve operational capabilities by monitoring low-level airspace in battle zones. It also controls Ground-Based Air Defence Weapon Systems, making air defense more effective.

Akashteer allows for seamless integration of air defense components. Real-time data sharing improves coordination among units, helping commanders make better decisions during critical moments. This, in turn, boosts the overall effectiveness of air defense operations.

Project Akashteer: Promoting Self-Reliance in Defense

In March 2023, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with BEL for Project Akashteer, worth ₹1,982 crore (US$237 million). This contract is part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting self-reliance in the defense sector.

This system integrates radar and communication systems into one network. This integration increases situational awareness in air defense operations. The system is vehicle-based, making it mobile and adaptable to hostile environments. Its mobility allows for quick deployment and efficient operation in challenging conditions.

The system also automates the air defense process, reducing manual inputs and ensuring faster responses during critical operations. This automation leads to improved accuracy and quicker decision-making in the field.

Enhancing Efficiency and Preparedness

Akashteer’s integration of radar and communication systems allows for efficient airspace monitoring. This system helps protect allied aircraft and respond to enemy threats more effectively. The automation provided by Akashteer enhances operational efficiency, ensuring faster decision-making during missions.

The mobility of the system ensures that it can be easily deployed in various environments. This gives the Indian Army greater flexibility and preparedness, improving its ability to defend against airborne threats.

A New Era for Indian Air Defence

The successful delivery of 100 Akashteer control centers by BEL strengthens India’s air defense capabilities. By providing the Indian Army with a modern, integrated system, Akashteer enhances operational efficiency and situational awareness. This project also highlights India’s growing expertise in defense technology and its commitment to self-reliance.

As the Akashteer system is deployed, the Indian Army will be better equipped to handle modern airspace challenges. This achievement reflects India’s advancements in defense preparedness and technological innovation. Akashteer plays a key role in boosting the nation’s defense infrastructure and maintaining its security.

  1. Great. After ballistic missiles rained over Isreal everyone is curious to know our preparation on air defense. This topic needs a comprehensive article. Thank you 🙏

  2. Is there something similar like “Akashteer” when monitoring above 5000 meters of airspace in the battle field?
