TAL (Torpedo Advanced Light), also known as Shyena, is an indigenous, electrically propelled, self-homing lightweight torpedo developed by DRDO’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) for anti-submarine warfare use from Indian Navy ships and rotary-wing aircraft.[1]
TAL is a 220 kg, 2.75 m-long, 324 mm-diameter torpedo carrying a 50 kg high-explosive warhead, guided by an acoustic homing system capable of both active and passive operating modes, with fully digital control and guidance electronics. It can be launched from surface ships or helicopters, giving the Indian Navy a flexible, multi-platform lightweight anti-submarine weapon.[1]
TAL achieves an operational range of about 19 km, a maximum operating depth exceeding 450 m, and a top speed above 45 knots. Approximately 95% of its components are indigenously sourced, reflecting DRDO/NSTL’s push to reduce dependence on imported lightweight torpedoes for Indian Navy ASW operations.[1]
