C-130J Super Hercules (IAF)

From Astra Kosh, the AlphaDefense encyclopedia · Category: Air Systems

The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine tactical airlift transport aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force, optimised for special operations, tactical troop transport and short/austere-field airlift, complementing the IAF’s heavier C-17 strategic transport fleet.[1]

Induction

The C-130J Super Hercules was inducted into IAF service at Hindan Air Force Station specifically for special-operations and tactical-airlift roles, providing the IAF with a purpose-built platform for inserting and extracting special forces and conducting short-field resupply missions into forward and high-altitude airstrips.[1]

Design and Performance

The C-130J/J-30 variant is powered by four Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engines, each rated at 4,591 shaft horsepower (3,425 kW), and can be operated by a minimal crew of just three — two pilots and a loadmaster — thanks to its modernised digital avionics and reduced-crew design compared to earlier Hercules variants. It carries a maximum payload of approximately 43,000 lb (about 19.5 tonnes), enabling it to transport troops, vehicles, artillery pieces and helicopters into and out of short, unprepared or high-altitude airstrips.[2]

Role

Alongside the C-17, the C-130J has become a key flag-bearer of IAF airlift capability along the Line of Actual Control, supporting rapid troop and equipment deployment to forward Himalayan airbases and enabling special-operations missions requiring short-field or unconventional landing zones.[3]
