TAPAS-BH-201 (Rustom-II)

From Astra Kosh, the AlphaDefense encyclopedia · Category: Unmanned Systems

TAPAS-BH-201 (“Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance – Beyond Horizon-201”), also known by its earlier designation Rustom-II, is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.[1]

Design

TAPAS-BH-201 has a length of 9.5 m and a wingspan of 20.6 m, with a payload capacity of 350 kg, capable of cruising at speeds up to 280 km/h and operating at altitudes up to roughly 22,000 ft. The type’s first flight took place in November 2016, with production intended to be handled by a consortium of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).[1]

Programme Setbacks and Status

Despite years of development, TAPAS-BH-201 struggled to meet the Joint Services Qualitative Requirements (JSQRs) for altitude and endurance set by the Indian armed forces. On 14 January 2024, government sources confirmed the programme had been formally downgraded from “Mission Mode” project status due to these shortfalls, with DRDO’s UAV development focus subsequently shifting toward the more advanced, weaponisable Archer-NG MALE UAV. A limited order for ten TAPAS-BH-201 units was nonetheless placed for continued evaluation and limited operational use amid regional tensions.[2][1]
