MRSAM (Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile), also known as Barak-8, is a jointly developed India-Israel air defence missile system fielded across all three Indian armed services, providing area air defence against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. Developed through a partnership between DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), MRSAM delivered a decisive combat performance during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, intercepting dozens of Pakistani drones and missiles.[1]
MRSAM/Barak-8 was developed under a long-running joint programme between DRDO and IAI, combining Israeli radar and missile-seeker technology with Indian systems integration and platform-specific adaptation work, resulting in naval (LR-SAM), army, and air force variants tailored to each service’s specific operational requirements while sharing a common missile and core radar architecture.[2]
The system combines an advanced multi-mission radar, a command-and-control centre, mobile launchers, and interceptor missiles capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to roughly 70 km, giving MRSAM batteries the ability to provide a substantial area-defence umbrella against a wide range of aerial threats from fixed-wing aircraft down to small drones.[3]
MRSAM delivered one of the standout performances of Operation Sindoor, India’s military response following an April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. On 8 May 2025, MRSAM batteries reportedly intercepted more than 50 Pakistani drones and missiles during a major aerial counter-offensive, a result widely cited by Indian defence officials — including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh — as strong validation of the system’s real-world combat effectiveness as part of India’s layered air-defence network alongside Akash and the S-400.[4]
In April 2025, shortly before the conflict, the Indian Army completed final tests of the Barak-8/MRSAM system, formally confirming the system’s readiness for full operational deployment across Army units — timing that meant the system entered the May 2025 conflict having just concluded its validation testing cycle.[5]
In January 2025, India placed an order for more than 70 additional MRSAM units with Bharat Dynamics Limited, intended for deployment aboard a range of future Indian Navy warships, reflecting continued expansion of the system’s footprint across the fleet’s air-defence architecture even as combat performance later that year further validated the investment.[6]
Israel Aerospace Industries has separately developed Barak MX, a modular, multi-layer air defence architecture with interceptors spanning 15-150 km, consolidating technology gains from the jointly developed Barak-8/MRSAM programme into a fully IAI-owned export product. Colombia ordered Barak MX in 2023 for $131 million, receiving its first battery in November 2025, while Azerbaijan signed a $1.2 billion deal for the system the same year — a pattern that has drawn scrutiny within India over whether Israeli marketing of Barak MX adequately credits or compensates the jointly developed Indian technology underlying the system.[7]
MRSAM’s demonstrated combat performance in Operation Sindoor has been described by Indian analysts as one of the clearest validations yet of India’s layered, multi-tier air defence strategy — combining short-range Akash, medium-range MRSAM, and long-range S-400 systems into an integrated shield — and has directly reinforced the broader Mission Sudarshan Chakra initiative to expand this layered architecture nationally through 2035.[4]
