Today (05th September 2020) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), successfully flight-tested supersonic missile assisted release of ‘SMART’ torpedo. The missile assisted torpedo assisted system was successfully flight-tested at 11.45 am from Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha.
Congratulating the DRDO and defence research agency involved in the project, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that achievement is a major ‘technology- breakthrough’ for India’s capability in anti-submarine warfare (ASW). “DRDO has successfully flight-tested Supersonic Missile assisted release of Torpedo, SMART. This will be a major technology breakthrough for stand-off capability in anti-submarine warfare. I congratulate DRDO & other stakeholders for the achievement,” Rajnath Singh said in a tweet.

Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) has been successfully flight tested today 5th Oct 2020 at 1145 hrs from Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha. All the mission objectives including missile flight upto the range and altitude, separation of the nose cone, release of Torpedo and deployment of Velocity Reduction Mechanism (VRM) have been met perfectly.
The tracking stations (Radars, Electro Optical Systems) along the coast and the telemetry stations including down range ships monitored all the events.
SMART is a missile assisted release of lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo System for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations far beyond Torpedo range.This launch and demonstration is significant in establishing Anti-Submarine warfare capabilities.
A number of DRDO laboratories including DRDL, RCI Hyderabad, ADRDE Agra, NSTL Visakhapatnam have developed the technologies required for SMART.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO Scientists for the important feat.
Secretary DD R&D & Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy, said that SMART is a game changer technology demonstration in the Anti-Submarine Warfare.
It is a hybrid missile that combines technologies of two different weapon systems making it faster and stealthier. With this, India has got an anti-submarine weapon with much larger range.
The system is initially boosted by a supersonic missile in which the booster separates after the initial boost. After the initial boost then the sustainer engine motor is triggered followed by the removal of casing and deployment of the speed reduction mechanism. The speed reduction mechanism is based on a parachute system that is automatically deployed towards the end of the trajectory to reduce the speed of the torpedo. This mechanism ensures the torpedo hits the water in a speed that can be sustained by its mechanical components and it doesn’t collapse due to the impact.
The best in class torpedoes around the globe are usually available in the range around 50 km and rocket-assisted torpedoes can strike at a range of 150 km, the SMART on the other hand will have a range of over 600 km. Not just that this system will cover most of its ground at very faster rate not allowing the ship or submarine to perform the evasive maneuver.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) lately is working rigorously on various projects and numerous systems are tested in last couple of months. This from an organization that if often targeted for its slow work culture, shattering all the allegations DRDO is setting new benchmark with every passing day.
