President Ghani’s strong worded allegations

In a recent interview, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani made strong allegations with regard to Pakistan’s association with Taliban. He alleged that Pakistan “operates an organised system of support” for the Afghan Taliban.

The names of the various decision-making bodies of the Taliban are Quetta Shura, Miramshah Shura and Peshawar Shura – named after the Pakistani cities where they are located. There is a deep relationship with the state.

Such strong worded allegations doesn’t bode well for Pakistan as the mere names indicate the systematic support offered by them to the Taliban.

Pakistan’s Strong Demarche

In response to this Pakistan’s Foreign office responded as

Pakistan has conveyed its serious concerns to the Afghan side by making a strong demarche with the ambassador of Afghanistan in Islamabad on the recent irresponsible statements and baseless allegations made by the Afghan leadership.

Pakistan emphasized that such accusations erode trust and disregard the constructive role they played for facilitating the Afghan peace process.

Why such statement from President Ghani

For long Afghanistan has known that Pakistan provides safe havens for terror outfits namely the Afghan Taliban, the Pakistani Tehreek-e-Taliban and the Haqqani network. Such statements from the President only reaffirm how Afghanistan perceives Pakistan more as a destabilizing support force for the Taliban against a democratic functional government. Such strong statements from the President is enough to convince the Afghans that beyond the box of religion, their eastern neighbour has always been the root cause of all the loss they have faced for the past 20 years.

Even now there are some sections of Afghans who aren’t yet fixed on whom they must support. The root cause of this is due to the atrocities that Taliban subject them to if they don’t pledge support for them. Convincing such Afghans can be done only if the statement from the leader is strong worded and accusationary in nature.

The possibility of a much stronger leadership

With such accusationary statements, President Ghani has made a bold move albeit making him a key figure in the eys of Taliban. Should an unfortuante event happen, the next in line to lead the Afghanistan government is Marshal Dostum. It is also important to emphasize here that one of General Dostum’s son Batur Dostum is the member of the negotiating team of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. General’s another son Yar Mohammad Dostum is the commander of Sheberghan garrison in the Jawzjan province. General’s daughter Rahila Dostum is the senator in the Upper house of the parliament.

With such a strong control in the administration, the army and with the image of a hero in the eyes of democracy loving Afghans, there is no other big power in Afghan politics with such depth of access. That being said, Afghanistan needs to be watched closely by Indians given that we directly support the current Afghan government, most importantly the ‘Northern Alliance’.
