The Defence Ministry has already approved the broad framework for the project, which is valued at approximately \u20b930,000 crore and is expected to be executed under a model designed to encourage indigenous manufacturing while maintaining competition among suppliers. Current plans envision the final order being divided between two successful bidders, creating parallel manufacturing capacities within the country. This approach is intended to reduce supply-chain risks, preserve competition and provide the armed forces with the ability to rapidly scale production during future contingencies. While the tender is restricted to Indian companies, many contenders have entered into partnerships with established foreign UAV manufacturers possessing proven combat-tested platforms. This raises an important question: will the programme ultimately produce genuinely indigenous UAV designs, or will it primarily facilitate licensed production and localisation of foreign systems? The establishment of multiple production lines under the current programme could therefore serve as the foundation for a globally competitive Indian UAV industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As technical evaluations and commercial assessments move forward, the \u20b930,000 crore MALE UAV programme is emerging as a defining test of India&#8217;s defence industrial strategy. More than a procurement exercise, it is an attempt to determine whether the country can transition from being a buyer of advanced unmanned systems to becoming a major developer, manufacturer and
