<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe issue has once again come into sharp focus with the General Electric F404 engine that powers the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A. While public discussions often revolve around radar modes, electronic warfare suites, software maturity, or weapon integration, the reality is far simpler: an aircraft cannot be delivered without its engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Tejas Mk1A program today finds itself waiting for engine deliveries. While Hindustan Aeronautics Limited possesses a limited number of engines and continues aircraft production activities, the Indian Air Force understandably views engine availability as a critical factor in achieving uninterrupted induction. Rather than accepting aircraft in a piecemeal manner, the service appears inclined to use the intervening period to ensure that every aspect of the platform reaches the desired level of maturity before large-scale induction begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many observers have interpreted the delay as a deliberate attempt by the United States or General Electric to slow supplies. Given the broader context of India-US trade negotiations and strategic discussions, such speculation is perhaps inevitable. However, a closer examination presents a more nuanced picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The F404 production line had largely wound down before India emerged as one of its largest customers. Restarting and scaling up production is neither instantaneous nor straightforward. General Electric has invested significantly in reviving manufacturing capacity to meet Indian requirements. In fact, the company has expanded production capability further following India’s additional order of 97 Tejas Mk1A fighters, a contract that substantially increases long-term demand for F404 engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet the real challenge extends beyond the current delivery delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even if every contracted F404 engine arrives on schedule tomorrow, India’s dependence does not end. Fighter aircraft consume engines throughout their service lives. Depending on aircraft type and operational profile, it is commonly estimated that a combat aircraft requires roughly two to two-and-a-half engines over its lifecycle. This means that engine dependence continues not merely during acquisition but for decades afterward through replacements, overhauls, upgrades, and sustainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This lifecycle dependency is often overlooked in public discourse, but it is arguably the most important aspect of the engine debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is here that the Gas Turbine Research Establishment’s Kaveri program may finally be poised for an unexpected revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kaveri engine was originally conceived as the indigenous powerplant for the Tejas program. Technical challenges, material limitations, and difficulties in achieving the required thrust eventually forced the program off that path. For many years, the Kaveri project became synonymous with India’s struggles in aero-engine development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, the story did not end there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Few years ago, Team Alpha Defence reported that GTRE was working with an Indian manufacturing partner to explore the development of an afterburning variant of the Kaveri. The objective was ambitious but clear: determine whether the engine could eventually generate the approximately 85 kN class thrust required for the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program received a fresh lease of life through the Ghatak Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) project. During this effort, the engine underwent substantial modifications and evolved into a significantly different configuration. Reports indicate that the revised engine has demonstrated approximately 50 kN of dry thrust, making it suitable for applications such as the Ghatak UCAV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next major milestone involves integrating an afterburner system and progressively increasing overall thrust output. The long-term target remains the 85 kN class necessary for fighter aircraft operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Importantly, even if the full 85 kN objective is not achieved immediately, the engine’s current trajectory remains highly significant. The modified core is believed to have already demonstrated around 73 kN of sustained thrust, with expectations that further refinements could push performance higher. The strategy appears to focus on certifying the engine through flight testing on the Tejas platform before pursuing successive upgrades and component substitutions aimed at increasing thrust and reliability. The DcPP is decided and it will be Brahmos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited (BATL). For few years it was just GTRE effort but now they have Ministry of Defence onboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This incremental approach differs fundamentally from earlier efforts that sought to achieve all requirements simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of waiting for a perfect engine, the plan appears to be centered on obtaining a certifiable, flyable, indigenous powerplant and then continuously improving it through successive blocks of development. Such a methodology mirrors the evolutionary path followed by several successful aero-engine programs worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If successful, the implications would be significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An indigenous engine would not merely reduce dependence on foreign suppliers during procurement. It would provide India with control over sustainment, spare production, upgrades, and future fleet expansion. More importantly, it would establish the industrial ecosystem, manufacturing expertise, material science capabilities, and design knowledge required for future programs such as advanced variants of Tejas, unmanned combat aircraft, and eventually next-generation fighter platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n India’s aerospace journey has often been described through the lens of aircraft development. Yet history repeatedly demonstrates that mastering the engine is the true measure of aerospace maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The current GE F404 delays have once again highlighted that reality. They serve as a reminder that aircraft self-reliance cannot be achieved through airframe design alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For decades, the Kaveri engine was viewed as a failed program. Today, it may be evolving into something far more important, a bridge between dependence and genuine self-reliance.
