Shaurya Missile

Shaurya is a canister-launched, road-mobile surface-to-surface ballistic missile developed by DRDO, derived from the K-15 Sagarika submarine-launched missile programme, combining hypersonic terminal speed with stealth and rapid-deployment survivability for both conventional and nuclear strike roles.[1]

Design

Shaurya has a mass of about 6.2 tonnes, a length of 10 m and a diameter of 0.74 m, powered by a two-stage solid-rocket motor. It carries a payload of 200–1,000 kg — conventional or strategic nuclear — to a range of 700–1,900 km, with a maximum terminal speed of around Mach 7.5 and an accuracy of roughly 20–30 m CEP. The canisterised launch system allows the missile to be stored, transported and fired with minimal preparation time, improving survivability against pre-emptive strikes.[1]

Testing History

Shaurya was first test-fired in November 2008. An advanced version with an extended 800 km range was successfully user-trial tested from Balasore on 3 October 2020, and DRDO has continued to develop a next-generation “Shaurya-NG” hypersonic derivative as part of its broader hypersonic-missile roadmap.[1][2]
