Agni-IV is an intermediate-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO’s Advanced Systems Laboratory (Hyderabad) as a substantially upgraded variant originally referred to as “Agni-II Prime,” redesignated Agni-IV to reflect its materially improved range, guidance and re-entry technology over the earlier Agni-II.[1]
Agni-IV is a two-stage, solid-fuelled missile incorporating composite rocket-motor casings, a modern ring-laser-gyroscope-based inertial navigation system, and advanced re-entry vehicle technology enabling more accurate delivery at extended range compared to earlier Agni variants. It is designed to carry a payload of roughly 1,000 kg out to distances of up to 4,000 km, positioning it as a key intermediate-range link between the shorter Agni-II/III and the longer-range Agni-V.[1]
